Even from what he sees, he probably twists his mind into coming up with another explanation other than that people hate him. I don't really think he could face the reality of HOW MUCH and HOW VIGOROUSLY he is hated.

He thinks he is loved and adored except but for the very very few. But so much of his time is devoted to lovingly and adoringly thinking of himself and what a perfect specimen of astoundingly rich, handsome and virile manhood he really is. He has not much time for anything else.
