https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2018/02/12/585130274/trump-administration-wants-to-decide-what-food-snap-recipients-will-getUnder the proposal, which was announced Monday, low-income Americans who receive at least $90 a month just over 80 percent of all SNAP recipients would get about half of their benefits in the form of a "USDA Foods package." The package was described in the budget as consisting of "shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables." The boxes would not include fresh fruits or vegetables

(12,692 posts)Instead of selling at a loss to the dollar stores, they can sell their excess to the Government for full price.
Just like the MREs the troops get. All excess off the shelf corporate food.

(298,021 posts)be essentially killing people.. slowly and faster.. depending on who would be subjected to this. It's nothing close to nutrition.
It's cruel and despicable and only trump and his band of roving marauders would think of this shite.
Oh, they might have had help from the granny starver, paul rand ryan.

(36,119 posts)They're always complaining that snap recipients engage in wasteful spending = which is code for - "buying things that only I as a white privileged person should have"
Hell, they'd force them to buy wheat to make their own flour

(13,114 posts)SNAP benefits for food are not paid in cash.
They are on an EBT card.
I know, because I get $91.00 per month loaded on my card.
I have never received cash !!!!!!!!!
I guess if you don't like what comes in the government box you can starve.
I guess if you don't have teeth to chew ready to eat cereals you can starve.
I guess if you are allergic to peanut butter you can starve, or eat it and die.

SamKnause
(13,114 posts)If not, you have a reading comprehension problem.
I stated the article is incorrect.
No cash is ever involved.
Nowhere did I state I want anyone picking out my food.
I wouldn't eat half of the stuff mentioned in the article.

(13,081 posts)The closest I found was Currently, SNAP beneficiaries get money loaded onto an EBT card they can use to buy what they want as long as it falls under the guidelines.
SamKnause
(13,114 posts)I don't see it in the article now.
I would have sworn it stated they get cash.
That is why I responded.
Have a great evening.

(34,195 posts)I get $25 a month EBT.
It's based on my monthly Social Security. (I'm 71 and disabled)
I let it roll over each month until I have $100, and then use my EBT.
Otherwise I just use my S/S money for groceries.

(13,114 posts)I live in Ohio.
I am 64 and on Social Security Disability Insurance.
I will switch over to Social Security at 66, per the advice of the Social Security office.
I was informed my Social Security will be less than my SSDI.

(34,195 posts)I think the S/S website has a place where you can find out how much $ you'll get.
This may be it = https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/AnypiaApplet.html
I get approximately the national average monthly S/S.

(4,267 posts)Not to mention, what if people are allergic to the packages they select for us? What if we have reasons that we can't eat these foods? Peanut butter is out for me (allergy), milk is out (lactose intolerant), can only eat certain fruits and vegetables.
This one would see me to my Congressperson, even if I have to hobble over there in person.

(9,279 posts)I remember my grandma, who was a poor widow (we werent that much better off) getting government peanut butter in the 60s - it came in cans with a key like the old Spam cans. Dad would talk about government cheese that was also given out in pre-food stamp days.

(34,195 posts)Some of our neighbors received "surplus food".
My mom drove a neighbor each month to a central location where people who were eligible got a box of food each month.
It had bags of rice, beans, macaroni, powdered milk, large cans of something like 'Spam',
large blocks of cheese, flour, peanut butter, lard, etc. I think there were cans of cooked beef chunks in brown gravy (that looked like dog food).
This was before Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" social programs.
