The Trump administration is proposing to save billions in the coming years by giving low-income families a box of government-picked, nonperishable foods every month instead of food stamps.
White House OMB Director Mick Mulvaney on Monday hailed the idea as one that kept up with the modern era, calling it a "Blue Apron-type program" a nod to the high-end meal kit delivery company that had one of the worst stock debuts in 2017 and has struggled to hold onto customers. Mulvaney said the administrations plan would not only save the government money, but also provide people with more nutritious food than they have now.
The proposal, buried in the White Houses fiscal 2019 budget, would replace about half of the money most families receive via the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, with what the Department of Agriculture is calling Americas Harvest Box. That package would be made up of "100 percent U.S. grown and produced food" and would include items like shelf-stable milk, peanut butter, canned fruits and meats, and cereal.

(22,123 posts)they distributed the cheese out to participants in some kind of similar programs (I am not sure what they were called then, it's been some time ago). Government at that time brought up surplus bulk foods to support farmers etc.
I'm not sure how these plans worked back then, but it sounds like a nightmare to coordinate shipping of all of these bulk foods into the places needed, etc. (you need a whole infrastructure to handle), so who is going to pay for the handling of these boxes of food and get them to the places needed?
Just think of the costs involved.
I think people who are relying on these food stamps know way better on how to spend this money, than these idiots in congress or the executive branches of government (as we are continuously discovering on a daily basis). Idiots.

(49,533 posts)I would say that's exactly what they are thinking of. Because those costs will be paid directly to their fatcat buddies who put these things together. This is a handout to big business.

(52,224 posts)and feed rotten fruit and stale bread to the poor people who will then not really have much choice or say in the matter.
and blue apron will pocket the guaranteed profits and laugh all the way to the bank.
see, *that* is how you do welfare, republican style.
welfare -- it's not for hard-working poor people, it's for lazy rich business people who can't make their business work without being propped up by the government.

But, I am thinking...
this argument could be used against many "librul" ideas.. that being, "WE KNOW BETTER how to spend out money rather than pay taxes to the gubmint." Like for roads, health care, education, SCIENCE... etc etc...
etc etc
So I think we need to have a better argument against it..
