Season 2 Episode 29 The Portland Trip...

At mark 29:09 into my DVD copy... a Gay Republican Congressperson named Matt proposes exactly that strategy as an explanation as to why he is a member of the GOP.

"I don't understand why you gun control people don't all sign up to become members of the NRA. You bring 3 million to the next meeting and All those in favor of tossing guns... and bam! no more guns"

The gun nuts went to the NRA's national convention in Cincinnati
in 1977 and voted in their own slate of candidates, displacing the
existing leadership that ran the organization with an emphasis on
gun safety, marksmanship and hunting. The new leadership gave
the organization into it's current bone headed support of second
amendment rights, concealed carry for everyone and semiautomatic
weapon fetish. If liberals want to take over the NRA they should
do so by demanding the organization go back to it's roots.
