In states where it is literally impossible for a Democrat to win a seat, the next-best result is for an anti-Trump Republican to win the seat.
In order to Impeach and Remove Trump, we'll need 67 Senate votes to convict.
We're never going to get to 67 Dems in the Senate in the next couple years.... even if we won every single Senate race in '18, we'd only have 57.... so we need Never-Trump Republicans to make up the difference.
I believe that if a Democratic-led House votes to impeach President Trump, that Romney would be a "guilty" vote in the Senate.

(14,914 posts)Reagan, Romney and the awful Bush/Cheney duo are now preferable choices when compared to Trump.

So in effect, it will be like Hatch never left.

(13,305 posts)Seems like a good approach. I mean Republicans never run candidates in heavily blue states or anything. And it's not like we're winning in plenty of deep red areas lately due to Trump or anything. Giving up before it even starts is probably the best approach.
If anyone is counting on Romney to be the voice of sanity for anything then we are much farther gone than I ever expected we would be.

(1,202 posts)He dislikes Trumps and Utah's are not liking Trump either. In that respect Hatch messed up big time. Utahns are of the mindset (thanks to Mormondom) that it must always be a Republican over a Democrat and Trump was the only Republican on the ballot for POTUS. BUT, Romney but rolled over and showed his underbelly when SoS was in the offering.
So I suppose it'll be Romney who might dislike Trump enough to vote for impeachment, or another Rep like the lock step Mia Love type that would for sure try to protect Trump when it comes down to a vote.
Like walking across broken glass and seeing if the Republican candidate will eventually throw you a bandaid....where you all know a Dem would give you a pair of shoes even before you have to take that first step.

(16,698 posts)Alternate strategy. Find the most un-mormon Republican candidate one can find, and run a local democrat against them.

The State of Utah is a modern day Theocracy. Enough said.
