there were very specific sets of self defense techniques taught for specific scenarios (disarming & incapacitating someone with a handgun is quite a bit different from doing the same to someone with a rifle), but they all involved starting activity in extremely close proximity to the shooter, and it was made quite clear that these were methods of last resort which would likely end in the injury and/or death of the martial artist, not the shooter. if you're being taken prisoner at gunpoint you might have a chance of pulling it off without dying. if your adversary is hunting your ass, you need to get the fuck out of his/her line of sight asap.

above all it was emphasized that the person with the firearm has a HUGE advantage. even the moronic cockbrained ideas of arming all students and teachers with guns have more merit in overturning a live shooter situation than calling for hand-to-hand combat training and charging the shooter as a solution.
