We've marched against war, for civil rights and canvassed in another state for President Obama. We've walked the bridge in Selma and picketed with union labor in Illinois and Indiana. We drove through a hurricane in 2012 to protest at the GOP convention and participated in Occupy encampments in DC and St. Louis. We were in DC for the Women's March in 2017.

We don't agree on everything, but we are both liberal Democrats and her participation, support and insight are the only reason I can get through the day sometimes in the deep red community in which we live.

I am a lucky Democrat.

I live in NW Florida where the red is blood red. If my husband and I were not in the same page politically, I’d go stark raving mad. There ARE Democrats here but many keep a low profile to avoid the crazies. The tRump people. A few are brave enough to put a bumper sticker on their cars (or have Obama stickers still on their cars).

I figured tRump would be gone by now. Looks like I was wrong. But Mueller seems to have tightened up his case today. tRump should have his ass puckered up to his Adam’s apple. Hallelujah!

My sister informed me of an unwritten family rule, " We (my last name) never marry or date GOP supporters". This was after I had begun to date a guy who lived with his grandmother who had an "I LOVE Bush" sign in her window. I tore it up when Granny was on a family outing one day. She never noticed. The relationship was doomed none the less. I should have known better. I have enough patience to teach first graders, but anyone with GOP beliefs is a beyond my realm of patience and principles. Even my outgoing message on my phone machine for 1 1/2 years has been, "This is ***-****. Please leave a message, unless you are a Republican then please run along". I think it shows considerable restraint since I really want to say, "...then go fuck off".

Doodley, my husband is a lifelong Democrat who voted for 45 and STILL supports him. It has definitely changed our relationship, and I don't see how it can ever return to how it once was.

I'm amazed on a daily basis at how he can overlook or ignore the facts right in front of us. A couple of weeks ago I downgraded our cable to basic so we no longer get fauxnews. I'm hoping that it reduces the amount of garbage that he hears, but I suspect that he's still listening to right wing radio when he's out and about.

At this point I don't think any news could come out about 45 that would change his mind. It truly is like he has been taken in by a cult.
Like your wife, he has ridiculous responses to news that's disparaging to 45. We don't fight as much now as we did last year, but there's an awful tension in the air.

Every day I wonder what the hell happened to my husband's brain.

I am very lucky in that my husband and my family agree politically on nearly every issue. (His family has some Republicans; it's difficult for him.)

But nearly every person has some fault that would seem like a deal breaker from the outside of a marriage. Only from within the marriage can you understand the love that allows you to forgive the seemingly unforgivable.

Kudos to you. May you have a long and happy marriage--and may she one day see the light.

remarried in her 60s to a high school friend.

He was now a liberal California style Democrat.

Funny thing is that he used humor to get her to laugh at her positions. If someone saw somebody on TV say we need to get rid of all the illegals she might say "I agree with that" and he would say

"Can't they wait until they get all the apples in first? I like apples. What do you have against apples?"

"I love apples"

"Are you going to pick them? Your children? Your grandchildren? I hate to give up apples, can't they stay until all the apples are in, please?"

Now she would we be laughing and say that they should stay until the apples are in.

After a couple of minutes he would say "Man I love strawberries" and now she would be laughing and concede the point, we need these nice people.

It was very strange to see this guy who we didn't know very well be able to turn her politics around not by arguing with her but by using sly humor. He was really quite good at it and she became much more of a middle of the road person.

I remember when republican types were the forerunners in the environmental movement. I'm still there.

80. I have dear friends who are Republicans, and that

will never change, but the more recent Republicans, the converts from dixiecrats in the 80s, really concern me. I love them too, but the conspiracy theories involved bother the hell out of me.

I think there was a time, maybe up until the 1990's where There were manageable differences between Democratic Party members and Republicans. Republicans have been the party of business interests and laissez faire economics, but they also wanted government to stay out of people's private lives as well (with some caveats). However, when Gingrich turned everything into a zero sum political game and De Lay and the rest of the Republicans jumped onto the K-Street bandwagon, Republicans started the march to extreme land. Fox and right-wing media helped to keep people blind to facts.

At this point I think that there are core values that are so entrenched that it would be difficult for me to be with someone who's core values were so different than mine. I could not respect a person so easily or voluntarily mislead and if I cannot respect you, then I can't be in a relationship with you.

Good luck.

I could never date, much less marry, a republican. To me, life is hard enough to add that much more of a challenge. I don't make friends easily, either. In fact, the vast majority of my friends are ones i met in junior high and high school (insert loser joke here). And I'm starting to hate them now that they are turning out to be republifucks and libertarians! I hope your marriage survives this tumultuous period we find ourselves in.

It will be their saving grace when their hero goes down and they have to face the reality that they supported a traitor. In the end they will just hide behind the, "Hillary is just as bad," excuse.

doing something you don't like, (hogging the tv remote?) until HRC is indicted if she is so confidant, so sure. Ask her to put her actions wete her beliefs are. You can do the same, for trump or any mamber of his staff or family.

Oh, wait. Shucks, Flynn has already been indicted.

My late husband voted for Reagan. Eventually, he came to be more liberal than me. Surround her with facts, and she might come to her senses.
