There are a whole bunch of students from this high school who are incredibly intelligent and well spoken. What are they feeding these amazing people?

I drive Uber, for the time being, in a university town. I am so impressed with most of my student passengers. They give me hope. This intelligence isn't unusual...just unheard.

Emma Gonzalez has an important message for President Trump and no one should ignore this beautiful young woman whose life will never be the same because of a mass shooting.
Retweet if you support this woman and not the NRAs $30 million donation to Trump

A Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School student took to the podium at rally in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Saturday to call for stricter gun control legislation. Emma Gonzalez delivered an impassioned speech to the crowd, speaking directly to President Donald Trump and other politicians in Washington.
We will be the last mass shooting, Gonzalez said before the crowd of people at the rally.
Gonzalez, a senior at the school, was sitting on the floor of the auditorium Wednesday when the shooting that killed at least 17 people and injured numerous others unfolded, according to CNN.

We need to pay attention to the fact that this isnt just a mental health issue, Gonzalez said during the rally. He wouldnt have been able to kill that many people with a knife.
At one point, Gonzalez read Trumps tweet in response to the shooting about mental health and said she would like to speak to him directly about how much money he received from the National Rifle Association.
The crowd erupted in chants of Shame on you! after Gonzalezs direct message to Trump.

(10,299 posts)I don't know her, but from her speech... it was from the heart, it was raw, it was real.
Where the fuck is that in politics in general? Sorry for my coarseness but we are becoming such a divided society. Everyone's trapped in their social media bubble, tuning in to their choice of news that affirms their views. Communication is getting worse, not better.
She is one damn good communicator.

(25,812 posts)And I am actually in tears, which doesn't happen very often with me.
That young woman is so eloquent, so passionate. I think our government is underestimating the power that high school students are going to take upon themselves.
And just one observation: isn't Florida a state that has laws against high school teachers registering their students to vote?

Marjory Stoneman Douglas student Emma Gonzalez is a hero. She's calling out Trump and the NRA by name at this rally. Getting people to reply to NRA talking points with "We call BS!" Most are. A few visibly uncomfortable adults on stage. But not many.

Listen to the Emma Gonzalez.
We have let this go for too long. We, as a society, have failed our kids.
The time for action is NOW!

(51,565 posts)this past week. The night of the shooting people were asking the students who had experienced this what they thought should be done while other adults were saying on the news that adults are foolish to even give them a microphone. They were saying that these children don't know what the real adult world is about and aren't mature or experienced in grown up realities to be taken seriously for a single second.
I went ballistic. These so called children know a lot more than the adults. Teenagers and young adults know how each other thinks, acts, etc better than we ever could. They communicate and have their own "culture" and language. They were the ones, who we found out later, tipped the local police and FBI off.
They are smart, enthusiastic, and now angry and energized. Maybe they will be able to accomplish what adults haven't been able to do so far. Perhaps they will be the driving force behind real change and gun control like during the Civil Rights Movement. Or perhaps they will be the catalyst like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). There is a Nationwide school walkout planned for March 14th. I hope this picks up steam. It should be a walkout for everyone. 10:00-10':15 AM everyone should walk out of their job and have a 15 min general strike to support them and get this movement going.
