On August 1 1838 - Emacipation Day in the English-speaking Caribbean

the Methodists opened a church in St Ann's Bay. Seventy years later the church was fitted with a magnificent pipe organ. It was the church attended by Marcus Garvey and his family.

Early this morning this historic building was destroyed in a fire - only the walls are still standing.

It will be interesting to see if they rebuild since the stone structure appears sound. It is still a loss because of its historical significance.
