(68,063 posts)I go there every summer and have never encountered even a mild mannered, old school New England Republican there. I am shocked that Ryan would be there!
It is INDEED full of Democrats, me and my family members included! What do they think, they can OWN that place?
Why do they go there if they think it is so in hospitable to them? Let them leave. It is too crowded to begin with, so they could reduce the surplus population by staying home.
Doesn't Paul Ryan have nice places to go in Wisconsin? Door County is one. Why doesn't he go there? Is it "too democratic" for him there? Maybe so, because I know plenty of good Dems who are there (hubby is a native of the badger state).
MV is a gentle (if impossibly expensive) place. It is also beautiful. Please leave these folks alone, Ryan. Do your own right wing thing somewhere else...where people expect brutal treatment from other Republicans...not the beautiful Vineyard, which has done you no harm...

Since it is a bit of a schlep to get to MV (a long trip up to either RI for a catamaran that can make you lose your breakfast or a longer trip up to Woods Hole for a quiet ride across), drop off in Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs and a need for a ride or bus to Edgartown (I think that's where the episode happened) it is a real triparoo, even if you are in New England as I am. If I didn't stay with family for a week or so I wouldn't want to do it, even tho I love it as a place a LOT...

(13,992 posts)If he voted at 7:00, he didn't leave DC before 8:00. His best chance to get to Martha's Vineyard would be to connect to Logan, and frankly, even if there WAS a flight at that time of the night (again, massively unlikely) it wouldn't put him in Martha's Vineyard until nearly midnight.
And then he shoved someone and jumped on the next flight back to DC for morning Roll Call?

(46,103 posts)and back on the floor of the House at 11 this morning.
He cast a recorded vote at 6:55 pm on the last roll call of the evening. The House remained in session for three more hours, adjourning at ten pm. Maybe Ryan left immedately after the vote, got from the House to an airport and made it to Martha's Vineyard in time to be involved in this event (keeping in mind that it takes around 2 hours to fly from DC to MV and that it takes time to get to and from the airports,
but... under the circumstances and based on nothing more than "someone" saying that the guy involved was Ryan...
well, I'd be pretty skeptical, something that virtually no one else in this thread seems to be.
I'd be wary of making fools of ourselves on this one.

(17,162 posts)It does seem quite unlikely that any politician would do something like this in the public eye.
Perhaps the person who said it was him was mistaken; perhaps it was someone who looked like him.

I have no doubt that Pachamama described what she saw accurately-
what remains to be seen is confirmation of what a bystander said.

recorded vote at that time.

I don't doubt for a minute that you saw what you say. What I doubt is the claim by the anonymous "someone" that the guy was Paul Ryan.
Pachamama
(17,547 posts)I have no idea... I do know that credible people saw what happened and I was there too.
The person who was in our group said it was a Mr Schlossberg that identified him orally even to the woman and others as "you know who that was dont you....Rep Ryan of WI"...
If this is what happened (and we werent all punked and this woman was a paid actress) then isnt it possible that Mr Ryan got the hell out of here fast???? Just sayin...if he is on the short list for Veep, id say he wouldnt want to be around long....
I sure as heck have to say that i hope some one checks this out....
onenote
(46,103 posts)Again, under the best of circumstances (and they're a stretch), for this story to be true (at least that part of it that says it was Paul Ryan), he would have had to rush out immediately after casting a vote on the floor of the House at 7 pm, gotten to a car, gotten through traffic to National (and, yes, there is still traffic at that hour), gotten from the car to a plane, flown to MV, gotten out of the plane and into a car, and driven to the Hotel/Restaurant in time for this incident to have occurred sometime "after 10". Is it theoretically possible? Sure. Is it likely? Not in the slightest. Plus, why he was there is important since we also know that he was in DC, on the floor of the House, casting votes, at 11 AM this morning. To get back to DC from MV to that he'd have to do the reverse of his three hour or so trip starting at 8 am. So why exactly would he have come to MV at or after 10 pm only to turn around and leave at or before 8 AM? For a wedding? That he was thrown out of (which means by the time the incident occurred he would have had to have been around long enough to have made some sort of scene). It just doesn't pass the reality test.
But let me be clear. I'm not saying you didn't see what you saw or hear what you heard. It didn't have to be a "paid actress". Indeed, that's even more unlikely. What is most likely is that it was exactly what you saw. But the guy wasn't Paul Ryan. Maybe I'm wrong, but if I had to wager on it, I wouldn't hesitate a minute.
Pachamama
(17,547 posts)The flight from DCA to MVY is 391 miles and if its a Regional jet like ones operated by US Airways direct or a private jet, can take under 1 1/2 hrs. by taxi/car from MVY to downtown Main street in Edgartown 10 - 15 mins.
Its very possible for Mr Ryan to have been at the Fallon Hotel going into the bar area around 10 pm and having cast a vote in DC before 7pm. And if he was asked to leave town because of this incident and the need to avoid embaressment, then it would be possible to leave early the next morning and be back in DC before 11AM. Maybe he was going to have been here longer and trip was cut short?
I make no apologies for reporting this - perhaps i should have asked first if it was indeed him, acknowledging it could have been a look-alike or even a scam. But maybe someone resourceful can look into this and confirm.
onenote
(46,103 posts)but I've done it a lot. And it might take 15 minutes (not counting the time it takes to get from the floor of the Capitol building to a car) at 1 AM. But at 7 pm, midweek? Not a chance. I've spent the better part of three decades working on and around the Hill. This isn't just speculation. Its experience.
And now it appears you're just grasping at straws. Its simply absurd to think that Ryan was planning on skipping recorded votes on Thursday but since he was sent packing (all speculation I might add) he decided, what the hell, I'll go ahead and vote. The main vote today was on HR 4078 "The Regulatory Freeze for Jobs Act of 2012" one of those classically stupid pieces of repub legislation (it would bar any new regulations from taking effect until unemployment reaches 6 percent) that is right up Ryan's alley. There is no chance that Ryan, who has missed fewer than 200 votes out of over 9500 roll call or recorded votes since he became a member of Congress 13 years ago, was planning on skipping today's vote. None. Nada. Zilch.
Look, as I have said before, this is almost certainly nothing more than a case of mistaken identity. Whether the "someone" who told you it was Ryan was jerking you around or was honestly mistaken...I have no idea. But that he was wrong about it? Seems pretty clear.

(46,103 posts)Ryan was voting in DC until 7 pm Wednesday night. That's a verified fact. Even assuming that Ryan left after that vote (the House remained in session and had unrecorded votes on a number of amendments until 10 pm) he would have had to get from the Capitol to the airport, get to Martha's Vineyard, get to the restaurant (which closes at 10:30 according to its website) and be involved in this incident and then be back in DC voting this morning. In theory he could've caught a shuttle from DC to Boston that takes about an hour and a half. And then drive to MV, which takes around an hour. Or he could've take a private plane directly to MV which takes around 2 hours. Either way, its hard to see how he gets to the restaurant before 10 pm (and that's been unrealistically generous about how long it would take).
Against these known facts, we have what: the claim that an anonymous "someone" said that the guy in the incident was Ryan. That' it. Oh, and that he was in MV on a Wednesday night for a "wedding" (although he was in DC on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.)
You want to convince the media that we're a bunch of idiots? Take this "story" to them.
Pachamama
(17,547 posts)I cant confirm that, frankly, i dont give a shit why he was here. I just know what many people witnessed and the man on the porch who ran up to this woman was apparentely related to the Kennedys or so he identified himself by the name Schlossberg. Meanwhile an off-duty police officer from Boston ran over from across the way after seeing it.
Maybe we will never know? As a longtime DU member, i thought it was pretty amazing and I would swear on my childrens life it was Paul Ryan or a Doppelganger. And several people there, credible people, identified him as such.
Maybe we were all punked? Dont know...but it was pretty real and the woman was hurt and didnt look like a paid actress....
A good investigative journalist can talk to police and see if their was a report filed of an incident. If someone knows the Schlossbergs, maybe they can verify if they were there.
By the way - you can fly into MVY on a small plane from Capital to DCA can be done in 20 mins, 2 hr flight up to MVY - skip BOS (no driving or ferry). Thats how I got in and the folks Im with. Kind of like Aspen and Jackson Hole.... Not everyone takes commercial planes either.

http://scottwalkerwatch.com/2012/07/13/efforts-to-hand-count-june-5-recall-election-ballots-underway-due-to-evidence-of-faulty-electronic-voting-systems/
The Rock County Clerks Office opened its doors to an unusual request Tuesday.
A group of six concerned citizens wanted to cross-check Rock Countys election results of last months gubernatorial recall electionby hand.
The group members, who said they were part of the action group Election Fairness, had filed an open records request July 2 with Rock County and Wisconsins 71 other counties.
Its members seek to hand-count paper ballots in storage at counties around the state to determine whether results on paper ballots match electronic tabulations that counties used to total votes in the June 5 recall election between Gov. Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, said James Mueller of Cross Plains, the groups attorney.
Most Wisconsin municipalities rely on electronic voting machines to tally votes from paper ballots. The electronic totals are recorded and added to late-arriving absentee ballots during a post-election canvass.
Thats how counties arrive at official election results that they certify with the state.
But members of Election Fairness say they believe electronic vote tabulation could be a flawed system. The group argues electronic voting machines can misread ballots and lead to mistakes that can skew election results.
There is also fear that voting machines can be tampered with, Mueller said.
Also, does anyone know about these two statements:
FACT: The optical voting machines that do the counting in Wisconsin are actually configured and from Dominion Voting Systems distributors Command Central LLC, which has an office in Waite Park, Minnesota. Specifically, the office address is 110 2nd Street S, Suite 232; Waite Park, MN 56387. Whats very interesting is that Tea Party Queen Michelle Bachmanns office lists 110 2nd Street S, Suite 232; Waite Park, MN 56387 on her web site. Dominion Voting Systems acquired Premier Election Solutions, Election Systems & Software (ES&S), Diebold and Sequoia Voting Systems.
FACT:The purchase of the optical voting machines were arranged by Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nicklaus was involved like she was with the Supreme Court election between Kloppenburg and Prosser, where she proved she had a special talent to find enough votes for Republicans to win elections over a series of past elections. She was chairwoman of the WCCA Legislation Committee (WCCO Agenda), who met in June 2010 to have ES&S Judd Ryan (meeting minutes) discuss the optical voting systems.
