The politicians are just talking to be heard.

To the gun industry, dead children are merely collateral damage/acceptable losses for gun industry profits and political donations.

2. Trump will issue a directive to ban them

knowing full well that the directive will not pass legal muster.

That's so he can say "See, we tried to do something"

And then congress will dither hoping the issue dies out like always until the next mass shooting.

More likely will be federal law mandating teachers with handguns. Which will, I predict, not stop mass shooters... and will likely lead to other incidents.
