Oklahoma school district building bullet-proof shelters "to keep students safe"

"You think those things are never, ever gonna happen in your school, but, unfortunately, they do," said Melissa Hudson, mother and president of the district's parent-teacher organization. "Some are caused by weather, and some are caused by man."

That's why Healdton Public Schools leaders decided to install seven bulletproof storm shelters inside the elementary school and two larger ones in the middle school. Officials are working to get shelters for the high school.

"When tornadoes strike, and Lord help us, when you have an intruder on campus, to know that you have somewhere to go quickly for the safety of your students, it's very relaxing," Superintendent Terry Shaw said.

Not mentioned in the article, but reported in the televised spot, was that the doors to the shelters won't close or open if there's a power failure.

First, in the event of a shooter, there is no siren to warn you he is coming. You won't know until he's in the school so to get to the shelters the kids will have to leave their room and cross his line of fire.

A shelter is useful for the far more likely event of a tornado. However if the door will not open in the event of a power failure, they will need to stock food and water. The kidsds may be in those shelters a long time.

Could you imagine being trapped in a cramped space like that with 30-odd people, with no toilet facilities, for several hours (or much more!)? Ugh!
