coordinate a hurried half-assed "impeachment" charging every imaginable basis and, of course, not convict him, could the new Democratic Congress in 2019 "reimpeach" him?

(7,400 posts)However, as long as Mueller doesn't screw up and accidentally charge David Dennison with money laundering, I think we are still good.
Mueller doesn't seem like a screw-up kinda guy.

(2,551 posts)We could be in for multiple impeachments until it sticks or it leaves office.

(1,714 posts)but the Senate will not vote to convict. It is numerically impossible. Why is this even a question?

(15,124 posts)It takes 2/3 of the Senate to convict. That is 67 Senators. It. Won't. Happen.

(1,714 posts)35 Senate seats are up for election in 2018. 26 are currently held by Democrats. IF--huge IF--Dems sweep and take every single seat, that is a MAXIMUM increase of 9 seats. We would hold the majority with 58 seats. That's 9 Senate seats short of 67. We would need 9 Rs to vote to convict a Republican president. Do you really think that's possible?
Furthermore, 6 or 7 of the Ds who are up for re-election are in states that went for Trump, some by yuuuuge margins. They are vulnerable. No guarantee that they will retain their seats.
This is a pipe dream. Much better to deal with reality than to fantasize about impeaching Trump, whether it's once, twice, or 100 times.

If the "Blue Wave" materializes as hoped and we end up with a clear majority in the House, pick up a dozen or so governorships AND start 2019 with 55 Senators, give or take one or two, who can say that in the media spotlight of impeachment hearings there would not be a dozen or so Republicans who would not want to publicly prop up the traitorous pussy-grabber AND be on the wrong side of history?

(1,714 posts)that any incumbent R who would vote to impeach would probably turn off as many from the R base as they would attract independents. I don't know. It's all a crap shoot.
Just curious, have you looked at what is going on in the polls for the incumbents in places like, WV, ND, MT, MO? Those are actually possible PICK-UPS for the Rs.
We could take the House, but the Senate is extremely doubtful.

(3,580 posts)I can say this.... IMPEACHMENT is a political process... in theory, Congress could impeach him for scratching his ass. Having said that - I would be inclined to believe that there is no double jeopardy issue, except in the minds of the public.
I could be wrong... but maybe a new Congress for the second impeachment would need one little additional piece of information to review a previous failure to impeach.
