1. He's so disgusting. He thinks he is so clever and charming and funny.

It's so pathetic because he is none of those things. He has no natural charisma whatsoever. Just bluster and barking insults. He appeals to the lowest sort of individual in society.

He definitely has more than your typical politician. More than John Kerry, Al Gore, or Walter Mondale, to pick three particularly unfortunate examples. And it does matter. In modern times, unlike the ones I mentioned, the Dems who have won the presidency have had it.

It's also why his biggest private sector success was as a TV host. And as has been said many times, he's fundamentally a con man. These "occupations" are based almost entirely on charisma. It's hard to see it when you find him despicable for so many reasons, but it's there.

You don't really see it when he's reading, because he's such a bad reader. But he is something of a natural entertainer.
