because there is power in numbers. If all come together they will be more formidable than the NRA and they can stop the NRA in its tracks.

(16,646 posts)I know what you mean, but there are many reasons that's not gonna happen. It'd take someone fairly charismatic to pull that off. And I don't think someone with existing political baggage could pull it off (such as a Biden or Obama).

(25,237 posts)I think if the leaders or organizers of these anti-gun and pro gun reform groups thought about it themselves they would come to the conclusion that it makes sense for them to combine efforts. I don't know how many of such groups exist - but it just doesn't make sense that they try to individually overcome the NRA and lobby Congress for gun reform separately.
Maybe the students/youth themselves would be the catalyst for such a coming together. Certainly they have the interest of the MSM now - and I guess I can say they are charismatic in and of themselves.

(16,646 posts)Someone did suggest back there that there might be a "leader" in the youth that could coerce/force/inspire the various organizations to merge, or coalesce. I can see that happening. Of course I think it'd take a very charismatic student to pull that off thought
Mostly, my cynicism comes from both history, and the understanding that most of these organizations are formed and lead by people who think that the "other guys" aren't doing it right. SNCC, SLC, and the NAACP had notorious conflicts and it was only through the force of personality that King was able to keep them as well coordinated as they were.

(25,237 posts)Certainly after listening to many of the students that emerged from the Parkland School shooting that there are individuals that - with the backing of the rest of the students from that school - could mount such an initiative.
That would be one of the things I would put at the top of my to-do list if I were them.
Also - one would think that the leaders of these various sympathetic organizations would realize that they have an opportunity here that is bigger than their organization by itself. You would think these groups would approach the students and make it happen.

(16,646 posts)to their ears. I don't disagree, I'm just dubious that's much on their minds. At the very least you'd think they'd all be contacting them to try to personally support/coordinate/finance/encourage/guide them.
