Update 2 - it was a swatting hoax. If I catch the miscreant responsible, he or she will be drinking his or her meals for a few weeks.
Update - the all clear has been issued for my daughter.
My wife works at Northwestern University, and our 2 year old daughter is in day care very close by.
Shots were reported on the NU campus, so theyre both on lockdown. Latest reports suggest it may be a false alarm, but theyre treating it as though its not.
Im not liking this.
Remind me how having guns in classrooms is supposed to be a good thing?

Northwestern University warned people on campus to seek shelter Wednesday because of reports of a person with a gun on the Evanston, Ill., campus.
But shortly after 4 p.m., the Evanston Police Department posted on social media there was no evidence of a gunman or victim.

(17,984 posts)When I got there at 7:15, there were two fire trucks, an ambulance, and two police cars. A notice came over the loudspeaker about how everyone in the buildings had to evacuate. Of course, it was so early no one was there yet, but still it was scary hearing it.
Turned out to be a false alarm, but it was still scary. You never know, and neither the cops nor the firemen were forthcoming with new information. I can understand how it would be a lot scarier if it was your wife and small daughter who were under lockdown!

(3,557 posts)Ive been going to a few classes at my local community college - and we had a lockdown drill yesterday. Both of my kids also had a lockdown drill at their elementary school yesterday as well.
Its a sad state of affairs when this is a reality that we have to contend with.

(17,984 posts)I went by to have a look. If I had to guess, it was a food wrapper. But the firemen and cops took it very seriously.
You know everyone is now on high alert. We don't want to admit it to ourselves, but it's true. We can joke about it and act like we aren't afraid, but deep down we know there is something terribly wrong.

(65,227 posts)finals week to get exams postponed. At our school some classes actually set up alternate exam sites so exams would still be held in case of a bomb threat. That seemed to work, because the threats stopped.

(17,984 posts)I thought about calling my wife to tell her, but decided against it because it would just worry her.
That, and ive worked at my university for 18 years. I know where to go if I have to hide or get out. My wife has worked at hers for less than 2 months.

(3,557 posts)Its one thing to be in a situation like that yourself, but to have your wife and child in it..... words escape me.
I know I could handle being faced with that danger, but the thought of someone I love facing it, terrifies to the end.
Im glad it was just a hoax, but I completely understand the feelings you went through.

(2,990 posts)There were helicopters all over Evanston when I went to pick up my daughter. That costs serious dough, and they might have been needed elsewhere.
That, and it disrupted several thousand lives.

Thread is appropriate.
And the "threat" existed. That it didn't turn into an active shooter or a shooting or a suspicious carry does not deny that lots of people felt threatened.
Oh. You seem to be denying anything happened.

(7,349 posts)If you've ever been in an active shooter lock down (which I have), you'd realize whether it ends up "real" or not doesn't matter. The fear, anxiety, chaos, etc. are real and never forgotten....
