Malicious, petty, egocentric

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by SunsetDreams (a host of the General Discussion forum).

that's what posting spoilers is.

And I don't care about the Olympics. I'm not watching them. I'm not following them.

But why would anyone want to ruin it for those who get pleasure from watching and finding out the results for themselves?

You don't respect people who are into the games?

I don't respect petty, malicious, egocentric people who feel entitled to ruin other folks' innocent pleasures.

the hockey and basketball players "spoiled pampered jocks" because they play pro sports, but you can't say that about most of those athletes. They have worked their whole lives to get where they are. I know many may not care about the games, hell I only watch them every now and again, but the games are one of the few interactions our country has with other countries that doesn't involve bombing the living hell out of them.

Sat Jul 28, 2012, 04:49 PM
Jul 2012

that are posting spoilers on purpose. What I took issue with was there was 1 thread last night politely asking to not post spoilers. Then this morning there was one thread with a spoiler that could have been a mistake, perhaps the poster didn't see the thread last night. Could've been an honest mistake, and then a bunch of people went totally bonkers over that spoiler. I thought the reaction was completely out of proportion and that if those people were really that invested in seeing the event from start to finish without any spoilers beforehand, then why are they online? There was one time I wanted to watch the Stanley Cup playoff game I dvr'd without spoilers and I didn't go online, I didn't turn on live TV, I didn't talk to anyone until I had watched the game. It was important to me, so I had a contingency plan to avoid spoilers. If I went on DU and saw someone had posted the winner of the game, I dont' think I'd have had a tantrum calling people assholes. But that's just me.

Perhaps there should be a sticky on top of all the boards posted by admin letting everyone know. Not everyone was aware Americans weren't getting these things live (I am here in Canada, didn't know NBC sucked so bad.)

this happens with award shows such as the Grammys and Emmys, or even American Idol. We are all in different time zones and don't get the shows live.

and no i dont decide how or when or why you watch badminton or dressage. but i find it odd you would like me and other duers to let you decide when we can comment on something, based on your decision not to watch it live.

Are you seriously telling me that you can't see why sporting events shouldn't be spoilered on DU because there isn't an extant procedure for other events otherwise unrelated to the Olympics other than that they have an ending that could be spoiled? And that the absence of such a clear "nonspoiler" culture on DU means that requests for such courtesy don't make sense?

Is that in fact what you are saying to me? Would you requrie clear unambiguous signposts all over DU telling you not to spoil the end of "The Dark Knight Rises"? Or would you just go with the idea that it shoudln't be spoiled without being told? If you would go with that, why would it not "make sense" to respond cooperatively to people requesting that a similar courtesy be extended to DU participants for events of interest to them like the Olympics?

what about people who chose to get their olympic coverage from their morning paper? should we wait a day for them? newsweek and time? should we wait a week for those publications?

you can post *whenever you like* just be aware that some people have schedules that clash with broadcast times is all. You;d put *spoiler* in a thread title if you were posting Dark Knight stuff, yeah? same thing.

where I might run into a spoiler. I avoided people at work, didn't stop at a store, made sure the car radio wasn't on a station that may announce the game results and went directly home.

I don't come to DU to NOT find information, and shame on anyone else that thinks I should. If you don't want spoilers, don't go where there might be some.

If a game or event is so important to you, why are you coming here first? Know where your life changing event or game is and go directly there, do not stop at DU.

DU is about information, not the suppression of information.

it does describe him. I am so disappointed that it was referring to people who seem to want to spoil the Olympics for others. I am not at all interested in any aspect of the games and think that spoilers may be more a case of unbridled enthusiasm rather than maliciousness. But I could be wrong
