General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumsmy sister won! some thoughts from a purple county.
my sister, sheila rutledge, ran for a county board seat in formerly solid red dupage county. there were 3 candidates for 2 seats.
my sister outworked the next vote getter, erica green, but the vote totals are pretty close in all. looking at the precinct totals, i can see where sheila campaigned, and where the erica did.
they were #1 & #2 on the ballot. the #3 candidate, a young man named john macguire, was the loser, a distant third.
the message? the women are coming for you, republicans.
although sean casten won the right to face peter ro-scum for the 6th cd, out of 7 candidates, 2 men and 5 women, he only got 35% of the vote. the other man got 2%, and the 5 women split the rest of the votes.
up and down the ballot here, women outperformed men.
it's a new day.
onward to november.

(73,726 posts)ruiner is deeeeeply unpopular. jb has some baggage, but he also has some very deep support throughout the party.
he is a good guy, he has all the money in the world and is ready to spend it. i dont think anyone in the party has any grudges from the primary.
rauner took a beating in his primary. he barely squeaked by.
jb has run a really good, idea oriented campaign. he will continue to do that.
brucie is gonna get sent home bloody and a whole lot less rich.

(7,014 posts)I can't believe I'm saying this: Now we need to realize that TOO many women running for the same seats split the vote and the other candidate usually wins. Strategy is our friend.
mopinko
(73,726 posts)all the candidates signed a pledge to drop out if they were not the top vote getter.
they only want one dem per race on the ticket in november.
sheila is going against 2 incumbents. in a vote for 2 scenario, they dont want to split the vote, just as you say.
tho i saw last night that, in the state, rethug votes were down, iirc, 19%, and dems were up 185%.
10k more dem votes in dupage county IS a blue wave.

(90,036 posts)May this be a harbinger of Much MORE similarly outstanding news!!!
Hey, WE WOMEN are the real majority. EVERYWHERE. There are more women than men on this planet, and in this country. Seems to me a real democracy (yeah, I know...) would already reflect that fact.
mopinko
(73,726 posts)more women is good, whoever they are.
i know that many people in this race didnt even know who the candidates were. they just hit- woman, ok.

(90,036 posts)This may wind up being THE Year of the Woman. In November, anyway. How cool that your sister is part of it!!! Exultant!!!

(73,726 posts)what a nightmare that would have been. 7 months of that nut on the teevee machine? dodged a big bullet there.

(32,988 posts)Democratic primary, nearly double the number of Republicans. Candidates were fielded in areas where they were hard to come by in years past.
I lived in DuPage County for years, and know how tough it can be there. People are pissed. And demographics are changing in DuPage, too.
Congrats to your sister. Local government is very important to us.
