Washington (CNN)Ahead of the March for our Lives rally, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student David Hogg said the media's biggest mistake while covering the school's shooting was "not giving black students a voice."
"My school is about 25 percent black, but the way we're covered doesn't reflect that." Hogg said during an Axios event Friday.
Hogg, one of the core members of the #NeverAgain Movement, hasn't shied away from acknowledging his privilege. In fact, "privilege" came up in many of the speeches at Saturday's march in Washington, D.C.
While taking the stage again -- this time before hundreds of thousands -- Hogg and other students made sure to include victims of gun violence from across other communities.
'We share this stage'
"We recognize that Parkland received more attention because of its affluence," Jaclyn Corin, a survivor of the Parkland shooting, said during her speech. "But we share this stage today and forever with those communities who have always stared down the barrel of a gun."

(23,625 posts)mass shootings. Not all, but most of the young speakers and poets spoke about the inequality and the trauma of watching friends and family die in the streets. That said they clearly are working together with the Parkland young activists for change.
There have been many many marches throughout the years in Chicago against gun violence. They never get much attention from the press. Sometimes a few seconds on local news. I am glad yesterday these young activists got centerstage.

(1,792 posts)Most polls have gun control overwhelming winning with the public. The opposition wont change. They are the moneyed interests and the brain dead. They wont change. Never have and never will.

18% Hispanic
7% Asian
2% mixed
.5 other non-white
So he checks his privilege, more than doubles black enrollment to overlook Latino and Asian. Which is a fairly typical kind of mistake. Tweeters do mention "brown" students, though.

(4,033 posts)The Parkland folks (I won't call them 'kids') are our hope. They are talking about voting. I hope like hell they and their compatriots start running for office as soon as they are old enough. The 'get it'. If they can put together a world-wide demonstration like we saw yesterday, they just might be able to put our country back on the right track!
When you are staring down the barrel of a gun, there is no longer any class divisions. All are equal.

(5,210 posts)based on these representatives (and allowing that they're not all 100% alike) you absolutely could NOT come up with a better template than what we've seen from these astonishing teens. I adore them.

(45,666 posts)It was about general gun violence including gangs and how easy it is for criminals with ankle bracelets to buy guns in private sales also. Many of the Chicago guns come from out of state, especially Indiana.
Be wary of trolls trying to divide us. There were tons of black and brown people at the march. I was there and I'm brown. Plus one of the main leaders is Emma Gonzales who is a brown Cuban-American.
While it is true the media clearly show bias in favor of white kids. These Parkland kids are using their white privilege for good by drawing in media attention and then handing the mic to other kids of color from other cities and schools. Same team.
