Common sense (not the pamphlet) what it got wrong

Having a discussion on another platform someone stated “it’s just common sense” which got me to thinking about the things “common sense” used to tell us

Common sense couldn’t figure out how to mass produce sliced bread until the 20th century

Common sense said witches could float

Common sense had separate water fountains

Common sense didn’t include seatbelts

"Common sense" says the earth is flat and the sun goes around it. It took rational thought, with actual evidence to prove otherwise.

"Common sense" is shorthand for "I want to believe it, without actually providing an effective argument to back up my belief."

Whenever someone uses a "common sense" argument, ask to for the evidence. Keep asking for the evidence. Tell them you'll gladly wait while they retrieve it.
