If they looked up, passersby in central London on Monday got a strange and unsettling sight: 84 men, standing silently on the rooftops of office towers as if they were about to leap to their deaths.
Except these men aren't actually human. They are life-size sculptures, placed there to raise awareness about suicide.
The sculptures were installed overnight as part of Project 84, an idea made possible by American street artist Mark Jenkins and the Campaign against Living Miserably, or CALM, a charity focused on preventing suicide, which it says is the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK.
The sculptures represent the 84 men who commit suicide, on average, each week in the UK. CALM says three in four suicide victims are men.
Jenkins worked with collaborator Sandra Fernandez to create the sculptures. Each of the 84 represents a real man who died by suicide, and their individual stories are chronicled on the Project 84 website.

(41,691 posts)These were not among my family or close friends, they were co-workers and they happened at different times.
The first was an older man who was close to retirement and suffering from depression. Divorced, living alone, and his kids were grown. He drove his car off the bank into the river and drowned himself.
The second was a man closer to my own age that I knew quite well. A single man who had a steady girlfriend, and she thought they would get married. But he had a different idea, and went on his own and jumped off a bridge and drowned.
It's puzzling to those of us who aren't experiencing depression or anxiety, how someone could make that choice. I believe women are much more likely to reach out and ask for help and attention, while men won't do that out of pride or whatever.

(55,182 posts)my life time and they have shot themselves, overdosed on purpose, slit wrists, drove off a cliff, hanging, and gassed inside a car. All were men. Some were going to die from illness and it was a quality of life issue.

(58,285 posts)Those attempting suicide for the most part act on impulse, often after surprisingly brief periods of deliberation. But the impulse also passes. A survey of people who deliberated about killing themselves but did not act found that for about half, the suicidal period lasted less than an hour, according to Miller.

The scabs were...horrific to see. He was there, but he wasn't there. He spoke nonsensically. It was so sad, but there wasn't much I could do for him (speech-language therapy). I often wondered if he ever regained any typical brain function after his discharge to rehab.
I'm so sorry for your losses and hope you are well.
