Tampa: RNC 'Romneyville' camp faces legal review

TAMPA --
A tentative truce has been reached between city zoning officials and a group of protesters camping out on a commercial lot in downtown Tampa.

The city is investigating whether the encampment behind the Army Navy Surplus Market, 1312 N. Tampa St., breaks the law and whether the store's owner can be fined for allowing protesters to stay in the lot.

"The zoning department is reviewing this case right now," said Dennis Rogero, the city's director of neighborhood empowerment. "If it is a violation, the owner has 14 days to comply. If he doesn't comply, the issue will go to our zoning board's special magistrate for a ruling."

Rogero said zoning officials expect to find out this week if the camp is illegal.

Gregory Lockett, one of the organizers of the encampment he calls "Romneyville," said activists have a legal right to be there.

If this was clearly illegal there would be no "zoning board meeting" KurtNYC Jul 2012 #1

They are going to meet and come up with some BS about why it is suddenly illegal to do this but camping out for concert tickets or something similar would not be.
