1. I've long suspected that Manafort is much more afraid of Putin than jail.

Bad luck seems to follow those who are cross Putin. Terrible luck, really. Falling from high balconies. Ingesting horrible, rare poisons. It goes on and on.

The worst part is that the bad luck extends to their families. I'd be scared if I were Manafort. Spending my sunset years in a white-collar country-club prison would look to me like an attractive option.

In the case of the former Russian spy poisoned in the U.K., the innocent daughter was also poisoned. That's one more reason that it appeared to be a message... if they were just out to kill the spy, they could have figured out how to do it without trying to kill the daughter as well.
