Trump is a cornered animal. There is only one possible way out.
He needs an international crisis that he can peddle as an existential threat to the United States. And it has to significantly up the ante over the last one. It has to be something unexpected, something he can sell as a national security crisis because no one ever saw it coming and it’s so much worse than anything that came before.
The last such crisis was 9/11, followed by the invasion of Iraq. That’s a big ante to up. Bombing Iran won’t cut it. While his base would be ecstatic, an unprovoked attack on Iran would draw international outrage. Most Americans would see it as the cynical, calculated “wag the dog” move that it obviously is.
Trump needs to come up with something better. What he needs is a military confrontation with Russia. Imagine if Russia were to shoot down an American fighter jet, or cripple a navy ship that launched a cruise missile or two at Syria. Everyone in the media would be making comparisons to the Cuban missile crisis. The standoff would dominate the news cycle for at least a week. Heck, maybe even two. And Trump could fire Mueller in the cause of national security, while the craven mainstream media gives him all kinds of patriotic pass, just like Bush.
And Putin gets just what he wants. He outmaneuvers the Trump administration because at this point they’re all a bunch of third string opportunists led by a deranged fucking moron. Putin makes America look week, levels the international playing field, and comes out a hero in many parts of the world.
OK, it’s a fevered, paranoid phantasmagoric dream. Just thought I’d throw it out there.
