If/when we get through this era, we Americans are going to have to give some thought to the inadequacy of impeachment and the 25th Amendment.
A demented child/man is holding all the levers of power, running amok, and our system of checks and balances have (so far) proved to be insufficient to put an end to it.
When the original Constitutional Convention concluded its work in 1787, a woman asked Benjamin Franklin (so the story goes): "What kind of government have you given us?" Franklin replied: "A Republic, Madam. If you can keep it."
Franklin's reply is as profound today as when he originally uttered it. If/when we survive this era, our Constitution must be amended to take into account the horror that has befallen us in the here and now. And yes, amendments to the Constitution are extremely difficult to pass. But not as difficult as living under the kind of fascist dictatorship our home-grown oligarchs have in mind for us.

(56,081 posts)even if we get to the point where the media portrays donnie simply as a criminal and a disastrous president rather than merely "controversial", there they will still insist on characterizing any constitutional amendment to protect against presidents like donnie as something partisan.
remember, republicans still want to cheat, and still want to be able to rule like dictators when they're in charge.
they're not about to sign on to something that prevents any of that, and they'll insist that it's only democrats who want that, and they want it for partisan reasons.

All we can do, once Democrats are in power, is get a movement toward a needed amendment started. It will be up to those yet to come to see it through to fruition.
