"Larry - go get it done," @SenSasse quoted Pres as telling Kudlow about possibly joining TPP trans-pacific trade deal. Says pres repeatedly said it might be easier for the US to join now. Pres originally withdrew US from TPP on his 4th day in office.

I had a dog once who was deeply bonded and essentially glued to my ankle. Sometimes to mess with her I would walk circles around the dining room table.

(10,839 posts)The man is losing it altogether. Just like saying he never said a strike in Syria was imminent.
The Trumpster may end up leaving office on a stretcher, tied down with safety restraints.
Next thing we'll hear is that he never wanted to disengage from the Paris Climate Agreement.
Talk about flailing in all directions. Stunning!

(10,839 posts)I'm thinking there might be a real possibility of this once James Comey's books is released next week. From the sounds of it, the man has taken the Trumpster to the woodshed and called him out as unfit in no uncertain terms. Things are going to get . . . explosive!

(82,849 posts)Will anyone trust anything that the United States agrees to? Our credibility on the world stage has taken a beating in the last 15 months. Agreements long since concluded with our closes allies have been scuttled, negotiations near conclusion have been blown up, overtures to begin negotiations have been whip-sawed back and forth to such a degree that other nations are reluctant to deal with the U.S. at all. They can't trust that something said today by the administration will still be good tomorrow, or even this afternoon.
I wouldn't negotiate with such an unstable party, and I wouldn't blame other countries for shying away from dealing with Lord Littlehands.

(11,744 posts)It will likely result in some job losses, but also in opening of markets in other regions that may not have been that enthusiastic to trade with the US. One of the primary goals of TPP was to get something going to halt China's attempted dominance of trade within the region, so that would likely be a positive effect of the partnership.
Trade deals are historically a mixed bag, but the real problems with NAFTA, CAFTA, and others have been that the US does not protect its labor force. Policies protect corporate profit but not the actual producers of that profit. There was little or no actual funding to re-train workers from industries that were lost to oversees competition. The economy and trade actually grew but the benefits mainly went to the owners of particular companies not to sectors of industry or to the average worker.

(3,474 posts)The basic trade deal is beneficial; the various lobbyist Christmas-tree ornaments (corporate protections from national laws, overreaching copyright provisions, etc) make it a net detriment.

(58,698 posts)let's go crawling back to the real partners in the pact and let them dictate terms.
Don't get me wrong, it probably is a good idea to join, but by withdrawing last year, we lost credibility and leadership for years to come. Since this WAS the bulwark against China dominating the West Pacific Rim on trade, we already weakened it.
Trump's a fucking idiot. We all knew it, his supporters are just as stupid as he is.

(3,474 posts)If the existing partners refuse to reinstate any of the provisions added at the behest of US interests and suspended when they cut a deal without us, the Dotard might actually pull off a victory by accident (like the bit from the F-Troop theme where the fort commander sneezed at just the right moment to garble a bugle call in a way that resulted in a victorious charge).

(19,107 posts)When the Orange Idiot pulled out, the other countries remade the deal as it was really skewed towards the US. Zero chance the other countries (Who are quite happy with the deal now) give up much if anything to add the US to this deal. US would have to sign on as is basically.
Trump is dumd and screwed our economy out of $Billions in economic activity.

(11,175 posts)Of course, she opposed the final version that was released during the campaign. If Johnny2X2X (in #25) is correct that the TPP as implemented is even worse for us than that version, then the case for staying out is that much stronger.

(11,175 posts)If the changes that have been make the deal less attractive to them, then it's that much less likely that we'd rejoin now.
Also, I'm guessing that the recent changes don't improve the aspects that made the TPP bad for the US generally, such as the ISDS provisions.
