What do we gain by trashing James Comey at the very moment Trump:-Donald Trump
and the GOP:
-Ronna Romney McDaniel ,RNC chairwoman
are trying to destroy him ?
on edit- We all lambasted Comey for his inexplicable and virtually unforgivable interference in Secretary Clinton's campaign. That was then. This is now. He is under a withering attack from Trump and the GOP. As John Maynard Keynes purportedly said "When events change, I change my mind. What do you do? "

(58,724 posts)It shows that we, unlike the Republicans, are not pathetic craven opportunists who change positions on a whim if it suits the interests of the person at the top.
Republicans went from praising Comey to the high heavens to now calling him the worst person on earth. That is exactly the kind of naked hypocrisy that ought to be shamed and exposed. That's the game Republicans always play.
We don't have to play that game. We are mature and reasonable enough to stay consistent in our ideals.
That should gain us the respect of people across the country.

(58,724 posts)We were critical of Comey for what he did with respect to HRC while they praised him for those same actions.
Now that it is politically advantageous for them to be critical of Comey - they do a 180.
We stay steadfast in our beliefs, whether it is politically expedient to do so or not.

(99,714 posts)I can criticize him for his mishandling of the Clinton investigation and applaud him for his accurate portrayal of Trump as a "mob boss" in his book at the same time. It's easy if you try.

(99,714 posts)It has nothing to do with being craven opportunists and everything to do with not becoming recruits in the GOP war on James Comey.
As John Maynard Keynes purportedly said "When the facts change, my opinion changes. What do you do, sir ? "
"A foolish consistency is the hoggoblin of a small mind..." (REDUX)
How does becoming recruits in the GOP war on James Comey "gain us the respect of people across the country." ?

(58,724 posts)We are nothing close to that.
My assertion is that our consistency vs. their hypocrisy is what gains us respect.

(99,714 posts)It has nothing to do with consistency versus hypocrisy and everything to do with resisting Republican efforts to discredit him and his book which is critical of Trump.
I can believe Comey is a flawed and conflicted man and the portrait of Trump he paints in his book is credible and accurate.
