http://thesouthernc.tumblr.com/post/23162127167/culinary-a-love-affair-with-barbeque-in-honor

A few weeks ago I was riding with my dad, around supper time, and merely pointed out “That’s where Dixie is” as I had told him about it numerous times after my first experience. He got quiet, and after we had driven about a mile, flipped on his turn signal, pulled into a little pull-off and whirled the car around. “You just had to tell me that, didn’t you?” A few minutes later there we sat, father and son. Two Alabama boys indulging in our favorite tradition. Barbecue. Collards. Brunswick stew. Cornbread. Sweet tea.

And behind the counter? A red, white, and blue donkey. Above it, a common bumper sticker: “I am a Christian. I own a gun. I am a Democrat.” Amen, and God Bless us, every one.
“Come back and see us!” she says.

Yes, ma’am. I sure will.

An op-ed he wrote for the local newspaper. Says he's a former Democratic candidate for congress. As to the flag-it says a local group gave him the flag-the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The group is like any heritage group-some members are ok, some have a hidden agenda. Lots of people have been members of the group, including Harry Truman.

There are tons of bad logos out there. If I were traveling and hungry, I might stop by, investigate, maybe taste the Brunswick stew to decide whether to stay. If I saw that the place didn't seem racist/hate-filled, I might get a table.

The "Cracker Barrel" logo seemed inoccuous enough, didn't it?

Bad design exists. Books by their covers, and all that.

My family was on both sides of the conflict.
Guess what? The ones on the Southern side-never owned a single slave. They couldn't afford it, nor could most Southerners. In parts of the South it's still displayed and not meant to be a symbol of hatred. It's a small group that uses it for hatred and, as groups of that nature, are usually the most vocal.

With centuries of history to choose from, you pick a symbol that was designed specifically to enshrine slavery.

Actually, that is an assumption on my part. Can you show me pre-Civil War examples?

I have been told by many older southerners that this symbol was only seen in museums when they were young. It was resurrected during the Civil Rights movement. So the symbol was part of two eras: the Civil War fought to retain slavery and the Civil Rights battle fought to retain Jim Crow and segregation.

And I seriously doubt that your family "never" owned a single slave. What happens if they needed extra help to clear a new field one year? In the Norman/Celtic military culture that dominated the old South, the working class was considered inferior. Southerners studiously avoided working for another man as it was seen as demeaning.

So when my family needed help building a barn, clearing a field, looking after elderly relatives, they bought a slave. When the job was done, they sold the slave.

It is simply untrue that most southerners could not afford a slave. Most could not afford to keep a slave for life. But most assuredly did purchase a slave temporarily. They only way to avoid that was to do all the work yourself.

Even the freaking Amish don't manage that.

Twice I've walked into businesses and I've seen the Confederate Flag on display and both times i left the moment I saw them. I've also done that a few times back in Pennsylvania too.

Dixie Barbeque serves up interesting politics

Here’s a barbecue place in north Johnson City that has Confederate flags outside and in, photos of Confederate generals and soldiers, and a framed membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Quick–what presidential candidate is the owner supporting?

If you guessed John McCain, you’d be wrong.

Alan Howell, owner of Dixie Barbecue Company, Inc. is backing Barack Obama, and he makes no bones, so to speak, about why. “Our generation has just about fouled up everything,” he commented, “And that especially holds true for the guy in the White House. It’s time to turn things over to a new generation.”

Howell’s joint is a delight. A television set constantly plays re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show, and customers can order dry rub ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and beef. Howell has the first sugar-free barbecue sauce for diabetics that I have ever seen. You can find it at 3301 North Roan Street in Johnson City, which is the old highway to Kingsport.

I can't eat BBQ anyway. I'm allergic to tomatoes and they put me flat on my back in bed for two days if I eat the slightest bit of them.

Native Texan here, can't eat spicy stuff, have to eat bland stuff.

Oh and my ancestors fought in the Civil War. On both sides. My mom's family was from Mississippi, my dad's family was from Ohio. Got an ancestor on dad's side (Union)wounded at Chancellorsville. Got an ancestor on mom's side (Confederate) wounded at Gettysburg.

The logo doesn't bother me so much as it tells me to be on the alert. No shit, I am 67 yrs old, and I guess I must have ptsd or something. On point however, it is an old logo.A flag would offend me, this just scares me.

The logo implies a certain amount of insensitivity.

Judgement call follows.....

Are they clueless or trying to be obnoxious?

We've beaten this horse to death.

Here is the original post:

Would you eat at this restaurant?

..or is the sign an automatic disqualifier?

Dixie BBQ, Johnson City, TN

http://dixiebarbeque.net/

Just to recap: My intent was not to run down the food, the people of Johnson City, or the owner (who by all accounts is a good Democrat). My intent was to see what the views of DUers were regarding the display of the Confederate flag at an eating establishment. I was inspired to do this because of the many Chick-Fil-A threads.

I close with this thought: Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ. The Freight House. Kansas City, MO.
