I just don't get anyone -- especially a Democrat -- using those symbols of hate as a marketing tool to make a few bucks. Plus, someone above says he has a website that is a bit out there. Sounds kind of Tbaggerish to me.
I once got into a long internet battle with a supposed X-KKK member who actually does talks around the world and bills himself as a "civil rights activist." He said he was "reformed," but his promotional web site was full of confederate flags and racist crap.

(30,068 posts)My family was on both sides of the conflict.
Guess what? The ones on the Southern side-never owned a single slave. They couldn't afford it, nor could most Southerners. In parts of the South it's still displayed and not meant to be a symbol of hatred. It's a small group that uses it for hatred and, as groups of that nature, are usually the most vocal.
Zalatix
(8,994 posts)If you fought in Hitler's army, you were fighting for the Nazis. If you fought for the Confederacy, you were also fighting for slaveowner rights.
Anything short of that is just being dishonest with oneself.
ieoeja
(9,748 posts)With centuries of history to choose from, you pick a symbol that was designed specifically to enshrine slavery.
Actually, that is an assumption on my part. Can you show me pre-Civil War examples?
I have been told by many older southerners that this symbol was only seen in museums when they were young. It was resurrected during the Civil Rights movement. So the symbol was part of two eras: the Civil War fought to retain slavery and the Civil Rights battle fought to retain Jim Crow and segregation.
And I seriously doubt that your family "never" owned a single slave. What happens if they needed extra help to clear a new field one year? In the Norman/Celtic military culture that dominated the old South, the working class was considered inferior. Southerners studiously avoided working for another man as it was seen as demeaning.
So when my family needed help building a barn, clearing a field, looking after elderly relatives, they bought a slave. When the job was done, they sold the slave.
It is simply untrue that most southerners could not afford a slave. Most could not afford to keep a slave for life. But most assuredly did purchase a slave temporarily. They only way to avoid that was to do all the work yourself.
Even the freaking Amish don't manage that.

(95,337 posts)Not so much here in Northern Delaware but once you get down to the southern part of the state you have a region that identifies more with the south. So it's not uncommon to see the Confederate Flag in public view.
Twice I've walked into businesses and I've seen the Confederate Flag on display and both times i left the moment I saw them. I've also done that a few times back in Pennsylvania too.
I have lil tolerance for hate. I grew up around people filled with hate and it made me want to move away from there as soon as I could.

The South can get over it anytime as far as I'm concerned, because they now live in The United States Of America, whether they like it or not.
Same goes for those who think they can hold onto the flag of Nazi Germany. My father and uncles fought in a bloody war to bury that banner of racist hatred too.
The true "heritage" of the South is in the flag of our founding fathers, not something they stitched up a hundred years later.

If you guessed John McCain, youd be wrong.
Alan Howell, owner of Dixie Barbecue Company, Inc. is backing Barack Obama, and he makes no bones, so to speak, about why. Our generation has just about fouled up everything, he commented, And that especially holds true for the guy in the White House. Its time to turn things over to a new generation.
Howells joint is a delight. A television set constantly plays re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show, and customers can order dry rub ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and beef. Howell has the first sugar-free barbecue sauce for diabetics that I have ever seen. You can find it at 3301 North Roan Street in Johnson City, which is the old highway to Kingsport.

Dixie BBQ, Johnson City, TN
http://dixiebarbeque.net/
Just to recap: My intent was not to run down the food, the people of Johnson City, or the owner (who by all accounts is a good Democrat). My intent was to see what the views of DUers were regarding the display of the Confederate flag at an eating establishment. I was inspired to do this because of the many Chick-Fil-A threads.
I close with this thought: Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ. The Freight House. Kansas City, MO.
