I mean... sometimes you see the perfect subject line and quickly come up with a clever retort, an apt allusion, or a philosophical gem... then you click on the post and think... no fucking way...

(34,658 posts)you know where things are going to lead. So you don't start down the path.
Sometimes I write a response and when I am done, I click the back button so that I lose it. Gets it out of my system without causing trouble.

(17,651 posts)sometimes I just walk away from a freshly typed post and 9 out of 10 times, it's the back button and poof!

(15,686 posts)I posted before I read your reply and the response to it. I guess I'm not alone!!
Sometimes I'll spend 10 minutes writing a post and just before I click post I change my mind..
Of course being new I kinda watch my step and try to be careful that what I post wont be taken the wrong way.
It still is sometimes...

(72,631 posts)Please do not worry about being new... we really need the fresh input.
I really do love DU and spend a few hours a day here reading and educating myself!
VERY glad I found it!

(15,686 posts)But I know it would probably get me banned.
If I just can't let it go, I'll type out a nasty response but never post it. I worry sometimes, though, that I'll accidentally post it somehow, so I'll use my browser to back out of it completely. Talk about paranoid. Lol.

(2,935 posts)There are lots of interesting conversations here, but in all honesty, I left the Democratic Party after the Iraw War Resolution debacle. If I were to participate, I'd be banned within hours.

(3,173 posts)I hope you'll reconsider about not participating because it's hard to be civil. I agree that it's often difficult to stay civil especially when provoked. Politeness counts with most people; however, some assholes misinterpret it as weakness or lack of confidence. But you can't let them drive you away.

(4,452 posts)Every time I overcome that initial urge and read the responses, I generally know I did the right thing.
My problem is that even if I know that the post was just troll bait or the responses are not well informed or don't get to the heart of the question, I know I should speak my mind.
Almost every time I have overcome those self restraints, I walked away with no or incoherent response.
Two subjects that I will always avoid commenting about are Israel/ Palestine and gun rights.
It doesn't matter what you have to offer as fact or opinion no one will change their perspective on the issue.
Life is too short and there are too many important battles to fight to waste time on lost causes.

(53,410 posts)Lots of times I stop myself from being mean to someone. I really don't want to be that way, and sometimes I write something and then just don't post it because the impulse is out of my system. I don't always succeed though. I really have a lot of respect for those DUers who are consistently pleasant, even when they disagree strongly about something.

(19,768 posts)I just backed out of commenting on a thread because I knew my opinion would have rallied the perpetually outraged, and I just didn't feel like that tonight.
But other than a tactical situation such as that, I think everyone should feel free to speak his or her mind. And do so. Frequently. Say what you think.
Why do we often instead talk ourselves out of saying something we obviously wanted to say?
SoDesuKa
(3,173 posts)I always weigh my chances of surviving a jury when I'm tempted to say something that someone might not like. Usually it means I re-phrase what I have to say. Instead of saying "Blow it out Yer Ass!" I say, "I repectfully disagree with your premise . . . "

(8,169 posts)I've deleted a response without posting a bunch of times, but never thought other DUers would be doing the same. Usual situation is when I get steamed about an OP, then after composing a brilliant and incisive rebuttal, I decide I don't want to die on that hill, and hit the back button.

(22,271 posts)I'm a natural-born smart-ass as it is, combine that with the fact that, being a confirmed leftist, my political views are often not popular around here, if I didn't filter I would have been out of here years ago.
