A federal judge on Monday rejected an attempt by President Trump and his longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, to block prosecutors in Manhattan from reviewing a trove of materials seized in F.B.I. raids last week on Mr. Cohen’s office, home, hotel room and safe deposit box.

But feeling her way toward a resolution of the clash involving Mr. Trump and prosecutors investigating Mr. Cohen, the judge, Kimba M. Wood, signaled that she was considering appointing a special master to assist prosecutors if and when they cull through documents seized in the raids.

Michael Cohen, President Trump's personal lawyer, won a minor victory in court on Monday following last week's FBI raids on his home and office.

Judge Kimba Wood, a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, ruled that the government must allow Cohen’s legal team to review materials that the FBI seized from his office, home and hotel room last week. Wood ruled that Cohen's legal team will see the materials before the federal prosecutors investigating Cohen are allowed access to them, according to multiple reports.

Judge rejects Trump's bid to block access to Cohen materials

A federal judge dealt a blow to Michael Cohen, the president’s embattled personal lawyer, in a closely watched court decision on Monday afternoon.

Judge Kimba Wood of federal District Court in Manhattan denied an attempt by Cohen and President Trump to stop prosecutors from reviewing the materials that the FBI seized from his office, home and hotel room last week, according to multiple reports.

Cohen's legal team had asked for a temporary restraining order so that they could review the files and then turn over to prosecutors those that were "responsive, non-privileged items" — a request the government called unprecedented.

But in a victory for Cohen, Wood did order the government to create a database of what was taken from Cohen and share it with his legal team, according to The Associated Press.

The argument against such an extraordinary request..

U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood on Monday will consider Trump’s extraordinary request to let the president’s attorneys conduct the document review for information protected by attorney-client privilege before Justice Department lawyers can look at it.

“Under the president’s theory, every person who has communicated with a lawyer would be given the power to turn every search warrant into a subpoena and to demand the return of lawfully seized evidence,” the prosecutors wrote in a letter Monday. “Such a rule is unworkable and ripe for abuse.”

Don't know..just don't know when this newsweek ruling came down....

By Zachary Roth | April 16, 2018 5:11 pm

The judge in the Michael Cohen case has denied Cohen’s bid to have the government blocked from going through the materials they seized last week from his offices and hotel room. But she outlined a process where both sides will go though the documents for privileged material. The government can’t look at the substance of the materials, beyond the narrow search. The judge did not rule out appointing a special master to look through the materials, but said she’d decide at a future hearing ...
