Just a reminder that she was a birther, too.

State Dinner prep
Planning for Tuesday's state dinner, being held in honor of the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, began months ago; it was then that Melania Trump started to think of the details, such as an ideal gift.

So much to do; so little time. Please spare us the details of this woman's HARD life.

(40,210 posts)I do believe that we are all responsible for what we do and say, but I think she is in an abusive relationship and was saying what she was told by a controlling sociopath. I know a lot of people here think she is a gold digger and have no empathy for her, but I think more is going on in that sick marriage than we know.

Also, I like to think that she makes him pay for every single bit of her cooperation in public. Like, "Yes, I'll hold your hand tomorrow, but only for 10 seconds, and that will be $10K paid into my account beforehand. No money, no handy."

(5,240 posts)We can dislike her, be angry, but we shouldn't dehumanize. She has said terrible things, we shouldn't forget that, she needs to be held accountable.

Like they did trump for the GE.

(4,167 posts)I can see how normalization could of been used in my OP, but I also think saying humanize was ok, too.

(13,081 posts)Shes an Eastern European college dropout that (at best) married for money (and there are plenty of worse reasons). NOBODY who EVER married Donald Trump EVER expected him to be addressed as Mister President. Very few of the people who actually VOTED for Trump thought he would win.
If she was a birther, or repeated birther stuff, its really not something worth judging her over. She was clearly fulfilling her paid position as the wife of a giant asshole. She may even believe it. If so, its because thats what she was told to think.
It is really fucking hard to withhold judgment of most Trunpsters/Conservatives/Etceteras. I believe, however, that we should judge the people who programmed them. People like Melania arent the problem: theyre the symptom.

(42,282 posts)She is more to be pitied than censured
she is more to be loved than despised.
She is only a lassie who ventured
On life's stormy path ill-advised.
Do not scorn her with words fierce and bitter
Do not laugh at her shame and downfall
For a moment please stop and consider
That a man was the cause of it all.
Actually, I prefer this from 1900:
She's only a bird in a gilded cage,
A beautiful sight to see,
You may think she's happy and free from care,
She's not, though she seems to be,
'Tis sad when you think of her wasted life,
For youth cannot mate with age,
And her beauty was sold,
For an old man's gold,
She's a bird in a gilded cage.

(63 posts)Barbara and Laura were often presented as decent people despite the monstrous things their husbands did. When Hillary was first lady she was also given fair coverage despite many venomous remarks by Republicans. Somehow, the first lady is still off limits and I don't see that we would be better off by changing that.
Yes, she obviously married Trump for his money and citizenship. We should criticize Donald for conflicting his own policies. I'm willing to give Melania the same pass for standing by her husband that Hillary got for standing by hers. The problem is Donald. If Melania runs for Senate, then she deserves the press that goes with it.
