"America's Dad" found guilty of assault

is the top headline of the local paper.

And I am thinking: when will we realize that these are good actors, playing roles. Actors, and writers and ball players and other performers perform. This is what they are good at it, this is their skill. That we project on them an image that we form from their performance - well, we really should think twice.

No, this is not a justification for all the molesters out there taking advantage of admiring fans. But this is a reminder that being a star struck rarely ends up well. At worst - as we've seen several years ago - impressionable teen age girls were trying to kill a friend to "impress" a fictional character.

Yes, we debate the characters of shows but we do remember, I hope, that these are characters, played by actors and if they are really good, they even win an award or two.
