(18,635 posts)I don't know about everyone else, but I did what Sarah did when she got home... I googled it:
Agony Aunt
There are plenty of unlikable characters in this dystopic nightmarescape, but we have a special reserve of hatred for Aunt Lydia. A lot of that comes from the fact that she's a woman... and yet seems totally happy to be an agent of a Republic that is organized around the systematic repression of all women. Who does that, Aunt Lydia? Ugh, we hate you.
Sometimes Aunt Lydia seems to be the voice of the Women's Center and the voice of the Republic of Gilead. It's her voice the narrator hears over and over explaining the rules and consequences of this new lifestyle. Her words shape the manipulation and brainwashing at the Center, lead the women in remaking themselves as Handmaids, and twist Biblical passages to provide justification for this new lifestyle.
One of the narrator's key observations about Aunt Lydia is this: "Aunt Lydia thought she was very good at feeling for other people" (8.27). This says a lot both about Aunt Lydia and the way the narrator sees her. Aunt Lydia believes one of her strengths is "feeling for other people," but from where we're standing (via the narrator's vantage point) this is hardly true. The only people Aunt Lydia seems to feel for are Commanders' Wives. She tries to manipulate the Handmaids into feeling compassion for the Wives:
Try to think of it from their point of view she said, her hands clasped and wrung together, her nervous pleading smile. It isn't easy for them. (3.18)
This statement reveals Aunt Lydia's qualities as a master manipulator. She "pleads" with the Handmaids, using body language like "clasped and wrung" hands to signify entreaty, while "smil[ing]" at them and seeming to act "nervous." Yet are we supposed to find any of her rhetoric legit?

(31,828 posts)Anthony Scaramucci advises Sarah Sanders on her hair and makeup
The White House communications director mentioned Sanders appearance after talking about her job performance.
I think Sarah does a great job. Shes incredibly authentic, and what I told Sarah on Friday is you take the big office For Sarah Huckabee, I want to do everything I can to make her better at that podium. I think shes phenomenal there now. But like every athlete that is training for the Olympics, every day we have to make ourselves incrementally better, Scaramucci said.
After his noting how press secretaries can be incrementally better, Scaramucci focused on Sanders appearance.
The only thing I ask Sarah, Sarah if youre watching, I love the hair and makeup person that we had on Friday, so Id like to continue to use the hair and makeup person, he added.
Scaramuccis comment on Sanders appearance is in keeping with the Trump administrations habit of commenting on women and how they should look. Trump himself is incredibly focused on womens appearances. When the president criticizes a woman, he almost always focuses on their looks. And when the president praises a woman, he zeroes in on their appearance.

(2,091 posts)"In short, it was probably the only compliment Sanders has ever received about her looks."
Now....step back. The author is saying that Sanders has probably never received a compliment on her looks! Again....who the hell cares about Sanders' looks?!!!! /When you start with this sort of bias and attitude, pardon me, it just ain't very convincing!
Women have to play by a different set of rules in the work place. You have to be more than competent, more than do your job right....women are judged by their appearances. A guy can go to work in sloppy attire, he can have a beer belly and be totally out of shape...but if a woman does the same thing?
I don't like Huckabee Sanders at all. But her looks, her smokey make up, this sort of stuff is simply not relevant. If you want to roast her lies, fine.....that should be easy enough to do without distracting everyone's attention to her make up.
The take away of this is in the real world, most people are giving sympathy to Huckabee Sanders for a cheap shot and few people are even noticing her portrayal of Trump lies. That is how unskilled Wolf's skewering was.....she skewered the wrong target, her make up!!!!
S.E. TN Liberal
(508 posts)What Michelle Wolf said was not an attack on LyingSarah's "Smokey Eyes".
It was an attack on "Burning Facts" and using the "Ash" which then is used to create the smokey eyes.

(2,091 posts)please report back what she says if you say it looks like ash!
You really have to stretch to get to where you are, but I applaud your flexibility.
S.E. TN Liberal
(508 posts)You are showing yourself to be confused.
The "ash" reference came from the "burning facts" part of the joke.
Burnt things often leave "ash" behind. That "ash" from the "burning facts" is what Michelle Wolf joked was used to create the "perfect" "smokey eyes" that LyingSarah often wears.
You might want to check what was really said and stop trying to insinuate something else has been said.

You have been corrected and challenged on your ever-changing and contradictory reasons why she is a clear and present danger to progressive ideals, and you just pout and call anyone who points this out as "being childish, and I'm not going to talk to you anymore" five or six times....

(4,544 posts)Season 1 is out on DVD and Bluray now. It's based on a 1984 novel by Margaret Atwood, who is involved as a producer and writer. It has won a ton of awards, all well-deserved. It stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred/June, with Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, and Joseph Fiennes as Fred (among many other stellar performances).
Is it sometimes hard to watch? Yes, but it is worth it. This is not mindless TV. It will make you FEEL and it will make you THINK. I highly recommend it.

(2,004 posts)I cannot believe the number of posts attacking Michele Wolf on DU. Michele Wolf was speaking truth to power. Her joke about using the ashes of burned lies for eye shadow was brilliant. The outrage is that Sarah Huckabee Sanders lies to the American public every day and the news media does not state that she is lying every time she lies. When the news media are stenographers of lies, the republic is in great danger. Every person in the media who criticizes Michele Wolf are enabling fascism and are outing themselves as collaborators.

Both deserved roasting. She should have thrown in a little about Paul Ryan too. What an ass kissing hack he turned out to be.
I absolutely LOVED that she called out the media. They had a great deal in creating Trump and now profit handsomely off of his idiocy and vulgarity.
