The US gave Iran the money. It was Iran's money. The lesson for the planet - do not put your money in the US.
The Bolton/Con combo is lunacy on steroids.

(15,365 posts)the first place - part of the FMS money it paid for weapons systems that were not delivered after the 1979 US Embassy takeover.
It was part of the Algiers Accords negotiated by the Carter Administration to free the hostages (for which the Carter Admin rarely gets the credit). Reagan reneged on that part of the agreement and it had been a sore point until it was finally paid back under the Obama Admin.
None of these so-called "journalists" knows the facts and none of them has bothered to clear this up.
FWIW: I thought that this was not well explained when it happened. Or it if was explained, it was not well covered by the US M$M.

(7,520 posts)I don't know details of these things, but it was Iran's money, and wouldn't it be subject to more and more interest the longer we held it for them?
ProfessorGAC
(64,852 posts)It was considered in abeyance. So as i recall, there was no interest paid.

Hi folks. You are correct my reference on Morning Joe to Iran should be the money, not our money thats already been released. Thanks for keeping me on the ball. ....
I generally like her on the show and was surprised with what she said and was curious if she was going to follow-up on it knowing she'd be called out on it.

(61,690 posts)We've already done most of our part of the agreement. It is stupid to cancel it after giving up so much without waiting for Iran to live up to their end of the deal.

(6,393 posts)Past experience in listening to her on the show hasn't lead me to believe that she leans down that direction in a hard way with these things. Anyone who does a lot of talking in these environments knows that you can make slips like that far too easily - and very few of them admit it and correct it quickly.
Thanks for this

(9,958 posts)Just as he ginned up fake evidence on weapons of mass destruction to justify attacking Iraq, he is now ginning up evidence that Iran has a secret nuclear program and that theyre thumbing their noses at the weak U.S. And who can believe Netanyahu? He wants the U.S. to wipe Iran off the map so Israel can stop worrying about what little support there is for the Palestinians. Why does the U.S. never learn that war in the Mideast is not a winning policy? I remember many people asking after 9/11 why they hated us so much! The U.S. government has given people in the Mideast more than amole reasons to hate us, from the CIAs work to overturn a democratically elected leader in Iran in 1953 to supporting Saudi Arabia and thus Wahabism, all to protect the profits of big U.S. oil interests. The history of U.S. actions in the Mideast are not pretty.

(9,958 posts)You may have already read them, but two books I found most enlightening are The Looming Tower, by Lawrence Wright, about the conditions and policies that led to the 9/11 attacks, and The Brothers, by Stephen Kinzer, about the machinations of Alan and John Foster Dulles during their years leading the CIA and the State Department. They should be required reading for every person who thinks that the U.S. is exceptional in all ways.

(7,349 posts)First off, the sanctions were multi-lateral and negotiated by Hilary and Obama. It was a tremendous accomplishment. Sanctions only work if all the principal players are on board. We had China, Russia, the UK, France and the rest of the EU with us.
We blocked oil from them to major countries, banking, military weapons, spare parts, everything. The sanctions were effective because we had a strong coalition.
Iran wanted to talk. The deal was negotiated, not just with us, but with all the parties. Russia and China pressured us. They were willing to pull out of the sanctions. So was Europe. We had to make the best deal we could, and in the end, it was good for the United States. Too many of our voting citizens (61 million, who have proven to be morons) think that this was a deal just between Iran and us. If we re-impose sanctions, nobody is going to follow us. Iran will have no problem trading with the rest of the coalition, and we will be the ones isolated. They can bank through France, the UK and Switzerland. They can sell oil to China and buy Gas from Russia. Iran can get military supplies from Russia and China, as well as spare parts. We're far from the only game in town. In return, since we pulled out of the deal, Iran doesn't need to grant inspections.
As for the "billions of dollars in cash" that we gave the Iranians during the initial deal, that wasn't our money. That was Iranian money, frozen since the Revolution as payment for fighter jets that were never delivered. All we did was return their money, which was our obligation under international law. It was delivered in cash, because the sanctions were still in place until the deal was finalized. With the sanctions in place, no one could use the banking industry with Iran, as a result, paid in cash.
If Iran broke the deal, every partner, including China and Russia would have to re-impose the sanctions. But if we break the deal, all bets are off. The United States' Moron in Chief has put us in an awful position and now we are up to our necks in shit on this issue.
