Catholic high school announces it will hand out 'modesty PONCHOS' on prom night to girls whose dresses are deemed too revealing
Students at Divine Child High School in Dearborn, Michigan, will be handed 'modesty ponchos' if their dresses are deemed inappropriate
The ponchos, some of which have bright colors and patterns, have been displayed inside the school with a note explaining their use to students
'If your dress does not meet our formal dance dress requirementsno problem! We've got you coveredliterally,' a note attached to the ponchos reads
Mary Pat O'Malley, the theology teacher who came up with the idea, said the ponchos were meant as a 'deterrent' to prompt students to obey the dress code
But one parent said the ponchos are 'a method of shaming, a method of bullying' and 'a method of degrading females'

(31,907 posts)What constitutes "too revealing"? Or are they left at the mercy of whoever is at the door judging their outfits on the spot?
I'd be tempted by say screw this and go party somewhere else!

(6,065 posts)1. No mention is made of a dress code for young men. Does that mean there isn't one?
2. Is the dress code as written definitive? Is any dress that does *not* violate the dress code acceptable?
I really need to know, because I know a couple where the young man is hoping to come buck naked and the young lady wants to wear a gown made of live skunks. They've retained an ACLU-trained lawyer who will argue that since the dress code is extensive, explicit, and contains no blanket clauses, that they will be in full compliance with the rules and must be admitted.

(2,447 posts)If you don't like it, don't enroll your kids in Catholic School.
That ends the phantom "shaming and bullying" that "one parent" seems so concerned about.

(82,849 posts)Send your kid to a private school, you're going to be subject to their rules, no matter how arbitrary or capricious they seem.

(4,429 posts)That looks silly. OTOH....., I have to say --if you google some inappropriate formal wear......I've seen some pictures of teens wearing dresses that you might wear to the oscars if you were very bold (see through except in, let's say, three or, perhaps, four small places). Some of those dresses were so risque, I couldn't even link to them.
I went to umpteen years of Catholic School - and I honestly feel like they get to make the rules at their own prom. I know that this stuff usually comes down on girls, and that's a problem - but this is a Catholic and private school.
IMHO, the school should work with the kids and their parents to make the event fun - and come up with guidelines that make sense.
I get that this looks terrible from a pr standpoint. But, again, just my opinion, the real fail is one of communication and respect between the students, parents, and administration.

(28,151 posts)I don't take issue with it. Plus, it is a Catholic school, not a public school. People send their kids there by choice.

(25 posts)The days of the hippie was rampant Boobs flopping everywhere, spaghetti straps and no bras. Jeans barely covering the nether regions and Jesus sandals just covering the soles of our feet. You know what, we all got an education. Boys weren't frothing at the mouth. Sure a lot of stuff went down but it wasn't in front of the adults. My granddaughter now has to, oh my gosh cover your eyes, not show her shoulders. I swear I was born in 1956 and I think dress codes were almost freer then.

(703 posts)The dress code was strict and cumbersome. But I chose to go there and paid my own tuition. I had several dress code violations mainly because I was well developed.
At my sons public high school there is apparently no dress code. Girls literally walk around with their butt cheeks out.
Seems like two extremes where common sense is lacking.

(58,724 posts)For instance, could a student with a different body type than yours wear something that would not cause her to get a violation, but you would not be able to wear something similar?

(58,724 posts)They seem to differ depending on the body type of the student (which is not something they can control).
