(205,220 posts)He was a Cairn Terrier, adopted him at age 6 so I don't know if he'd had a bad experience or it was just a fear he had. He'd totally panic and rip up the house trying to escape, so if he was home alone and there was a storm, everyone would rush home. And he wasn't a big dog, he was a terrier like Toto. He must have been very sensitive, there was one time he reacted to the one earthquake we experienced here before I noticed anything. The good news is that I had him until not long before his 19th birthday. He was a special pup.

(205,220 posts)My Dad was an animal lover and they had quite a bond. Rags also had a thing for men with beards, there must have been someone that he loved in his past with a beard. I sometimes brought him to work with me and one time I lost track of him - but it didn't take me long to find him, I knew that Dennis who worked in the back of the building had a beard...

(1,332 posts)We had a dog like that. You could try a thunder jacket. Available at most pet stores. Run about $20/$25 depending on size of dog. Also ours would go down the basement ( we kept rugs by the furnace) and between the noise from the furnace or air conditioner and a dehumidifier, the noise helped with the thunder and lightning. Sometimes we would put towels in the bathtub in the master bath and put her in the tub with a towel over her and close the curtains. Same when the local yahoos would set off fireworks. I hate the 4th of July anymore.

I always ask them, how did you guys get by, back in the cave dog days, when the storms hit?
