Robert Mueller and Co. are playing hardballBy Aaron Blake May 2 at 8:08 AM
President Trump and his allies in the House have done just about anything they can to undermine Robert S. Mueller III's investigation and intimidate its leaders. They've questioned the Mueller team's neutrality. They've wrongly suggested the investigation was launched based on the Steele dossier or the leaking of classified information. They've attacked the FISA court process. And there have been threats to get rid of basically everyone in charge of it, including most recently Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein.
Mueller, it seems, isn't cowed. And neither, for that matter, is Rosenstein.
The Washington Post's Carol D. Leonnig and Robert Costa broke a big story Tuesday night, reporting that Mueller at one point threatened to subpoena Trump if he wouldn't voluntarily sit for an interview.
Presidents have faced subpoenas before, but the mere threat of one ratchets up the confrontation between Mueller's and Trump's teams. Trump could also fight the subpoena or even plead the Fifth Amendment, though that may come with political costs.

(111,076 posts)1. Trump could plead the Fifth and get away with it.
He would pay no political price.

(28,270 posts)2. Sadly I have to agree
The republican Congress, the religious right and most of the MSM will give Orange Hitler a pass like they always do.
But Mr Mueller must continue to try and bring the lawless beast in the White House to justice anyway.

(7,811 posts)3. Yes, the Fifth. And every other tool available to a president. pardons, scotus lawsuits, firings,
lying, complicit media printing lies, rest of media getting blamed, complicit congress starting and/or ending investigations, distractions such as foreign conflicts, tweets with exclamation points, new laws rushed through by congress, 90% of talk radio defending him..and more.
Before november, what results is up to the gop. could be crazy.
