Yes, they were, FIFTY YEARS AGO.
It just never dawns on right-wingers that things have changed.
(Patrick) Little is the third Republican candidate for national office during the 2018 electoral cycle to have expressed openly anti-semitic and racist views.
In March, former American Nazi Party leader Arthur Jones ran unopposed in the GOP primary for Illinois Third U.S. Congressional District, and will represent the party in Novembers general election.
In Wisconsins First U.S. Congressional District, one of the Republicans seeking to replace retiring House leader Paul Ryan in November is Paul Nehlen, who has described himself as pro-white and frequently expresses virulently anti-semitic sentiments on social media.

(15,374 posts)Something like, "Yep, that's true then democrats got better, and the party members who couldn't handle the change left, became republicans, teamed up with the racist faction of the GOP, and took over the party so the republicans got worse."

(1,602 posts)Very few people really understand just how much things changed in the early 1970s when the Dixiecrats left for the GOP. The Dixiecrats never went away - they just replaced the extant GOP like a parasite, while many of the more moderate and liberal members of the GOP to that point became Democrats. The Tea Party / Trump party is simply the latest mask that the Dixiecrat party wears.

(22,768 posts)they are and who we are. Trump, for example, was surprised to learn that Lincoln was a Republican. Rightfully so, because he damn well wouldn't be a Republican today.

(3,781 posts)When Lincoln freed the slaves, most of the newly-freed slaves became Republicans because they admired Lincoln so much. As a direct result, most of the white landowners in the South became Democrats for the exact opposite reason. Things went along like that for roughly 100 years, until LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act into law (and by the way, when he signed it, he actually said that by so doing, he was delivering the South to the Republican Party for a generation). For having the unmitigated gall to give black people the same rights as "actual humans," most white Southerners (now known as "Dixiecrats" switched parties and became Republicans, which is why the Southern States are all a solid Republican voting block to this day.
So as you can see, the Republican Party at the time of Lincoln was the LIBERAL party. The CONSERVATIVES opposed freeing the slaves. And after LBJ gave black people their civil rights, all the CONSERVATIVES became Republicans. And by the way, CONSERVATIVES to this day are the ones opposed to treating pretty much ANY minority as equals, so I just don't get their whole tortured "Democrats were the party of slavery" argument.

Or, you know, get someone to read it to them...

(15,374 posts)That their hero, Ronald Reagan, kicked off his 1980 presidential run giving a speech in Philadelphia... Mississippi, whose only claim to fame is that three freedom riders were murdered there in the 1960s. He gave a speech mainly focusing on, "States' Rights," *wink wink*.

This was the strongest showing in the South for a Republican candidate since Reconstruction.
Whenever a Repug, bagger, or Trumpist thumps their chest about the Democrat Party (sic) being the party of Southern racism, I trot out this FACT, even though theyre not interested in learning anything.

Remember when Obama won his second term how many republican states were calling for succession?
