Pittsburgh joins lawsuit challenging citizenship question on U.S. Census
Pittsburgh has jumped into a legal battle over the U.S. Census, trying to block a citizenship question that President Donald Trumps administration has planned for the 2020 national survey.
The city joins a dozen other municipalities, 18 states and the U.S. Conference of Mayors in bringing the federal lawsuit, Mayor Bill Pedutos office announced Tuesday. An amended complaint filed this week adds several plaintiffs, including Pittsburgh, to litigation initiated last month in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Pennsylvania and Philadelphia are among the original plaintiffs, with state Attorney General Josh Shapiro representing the commonwealth. The Department of Commerce and its secretary, Wilbur L. Ross Jr., are among the defendants.
