They have caused traffic jams all over KC. I was driving around for busines today and twice got stuck in traffic for over thirty minutes due to extreme traffic caused by their crap. The authorites need to move this traffic on as its wrong to create a nuisance and safety issue for drivers.

(12,017 posts)you know what...it's just not worth it. the mayor went too far. he opened himself and boston up to lawsuits if any 'problems' should arise for the opening of that Chick-fil-a. should there have been a boycott? should there BE a boycott? sure! hell yeah! but all this publicity is backfiring...and it's only going to get worse.

(135,425 posts)Please. He was elected because he was a Democrat. He was elected to uphold "silly little unimportant things" like equal rights, equal access, non-discrimination policies, etc. He has very good legal advisors and I'm quite sure every word, every phrase and every paragraph of that letter got the scrutiny of a lawyer on staff.
He didn't open himself up to any "problems" so stuff that "Oh, NO! Don't Say Anything In Case The Bigots Get Mad!" concern where the sun don't shine. He expressed an opinion that is entirely consonant with the law of the land and the laws of the State of Massachusetts. He didn't "prohibit" a damn thing. And since when might "boycotts" bring lawsuits? That's as likely as the stork bringing babies. Why didn't anyone sue Martin Luther King, if that sort of thing followed?
And if it's "only going to get worse," well good. We'll "smoke 'em outta their holes" as Dumbya would say. Make people throw down against equality and tolerance--and live, down the road, to regret it. Appeasement on this matter is NOT a strategy, unless you're talking about a recipe for retreat.
Good grief....the "Both Sides Now" is thick up in here! What website is this?

ProdigalJunkMail
(12,017 posts)he made a clear statement as mayor (the chief executive of a city) warning/threatening a company to not dare try to open a business in his city because they believe differently and support organizations that fight for those beliefs. those beliefs may be wrong and may be bigoted (they ARE, but I am trying to make a point) but he has no right to warn/threaten anyone or any company for those differing beliefs. hell, here in redstate, usa, we have the KKK trying to adopt a highway...the state said no...and there is now a pending lawsuit over their RIGHT to adopt said highway. missouri lost this same battle...
i have not said one thing about disagreeing with boycotts carried out by private citizens...i don't know where you getting that. i think people should spend their money how and when and in support of whatever they want and i gladly support their right to NOT spend money in the same respect.
i think several prominent democrats have overreached...and i think it will backfire. but i guess trying to express that opinion here gets you a 'shove it'...

The vast hate-filled, homophobic, Christian supremacist apparatus is just not exposed to the outside world, nor does it communicate much with the world at large. This might be one reason why European intellectuals and media are so silent about large scale homophobia in America.

(28,706 posts)Many people have called for a boycott of the company (which is very different from the much rarer call for government bodies to ban the stores). Boycotts server simple purpose: They tell the company that some people will direct their business to companies who share their values and away from those who don't. It's "shape up or lose my business". The implied hope is that enough people will follow along that the business will make less money and realize that it's bad for business to turn off a portion of the public who might have otherwise done business with you...
The flip side is also true. In this case they're saying the same thing: "we will direct our business to companies that share our values".

(35,977 posts)Racine - Hundreds of people participating in a national effort to support the fast food chain Chick-fil-A are gathered at its only Wisconsin restaurant, in Racine's Regency Mall, Wednesday.
Wisconsin Family Council is handing out 200 to 300 gift cards of appreciation at Chick-fil-A as part of the show of support.
Chick-fil-A has been at the center of a nationwide controversy because Dan Cathy, president of the chain known for its chicken sandwiches and waffle fries, has been public about his opposition to gay marriage - and to political efforts to recognize same-sex marriages. The company has long been known for following the religious principles of its ownership. For example, it is closed on Sundays.
Cathy said in a recent interview that the company supports "the biblical definition of the family unit." His comments sparked outrage among gay-rights activists, and efforts to boycott the restaurant. Officials in several cities sought to deny franchises.
That has, in turn, led to a wave of support for the restaurant and for Cathy's willingness to be open about his beliefs and how they infuse his business.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee declared Aug. 1 as "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" throughout the nation.
In Racine, workers at the restaurant say extra staff was brought in Wednesday for the influx of business.

(21,492 posts)Sometimes I think being in the warm and safe arms of DU and the many businesses who provide benefits to gay etc. partners lulls all of us into a false sense of security about the steady advance of the rights of gay, lesbian, transgendered, etc. folks. That's not the case. Today's strong response to patronizing Chick-Fil-A is not just some pro "traditional marriage" protest, it is a clarion call of hatred for gay people. Those who have lined up and clogged traffic are not pro anything, they are expressing their hatred of anyone "different" and foreign to them (like a "Kenyan president"
.
They have had their "so there" day, and feel good about it. We have had a display of the challenge in front of all of us about the struggle that lies ahead.
Do not take this lightly. Take it as motivation.
RZM
(8,556 posts)That this is a clarion call of hatred for gay people. I actually think the motivations here are somewhat varied. Certainly there is a large bloc of people out there today who are full of hate. Probably a sizeable percentage of those eating chicken today. But I suspect the rest are there for somewhat different reasons, some of which don't really have a whole lot to do with the marriage equality issue at all.
There are people out there who oppose marriage equality and aren't filled with hate. Many are, but there are some who don't particularly care about homosexuality, but also don't believe marriage laws should be changed. I know people who feel this way. I suspect that deep down, some of these people don't really care at all about the issue, but they oppose it simply because the left is for it. On a related point, I think that's what is motivating a lot of what we've seen today. Eating at Chick-Fil-A today can function as a generic act of spite against the left and an expression of solidarity with conservatives and conservatism. I believe this is why this caught on with the RW pundits and ideologues who have encouraged patronizing the restaurant en masse. It's a means of mobilizing the conservative base in the name of a conservative idea and demonstrating opposition to the left at large.
You see this kind of phenomenon with all types of issues. I suspect that some people who expressed sympathy with 9/11 Truth didn't 'really' believe in it, but used the issue as a means of demonstrating opposition to Bush. I also believe that many Muslims who tell a pollster they sympathize with terrorists don't actually have such sympathy, but they say so out spite for the West. I've always believed that most African-Americans knew that OJ was guilty, but they preferred to act like they didn't because appearing to side with the system was a bridge too far. Group identification matters in politics and ideological identity. If the other side is for or against something, it can be difficult to admit you agree and much easier to pretend you don't.
There is hate on display today for sure. But I'm certain that plenty of people out there today are less saying that they hate gays and more saying 'I'm part of something and I don't like the other side.'
In any case, the tide is turning and it can't be rolled back. They can eat chicken all day long and it's not going to change the fact that marriage equality is on the march and it's only a matter of time before it's the law of the land.
Faygo Kid
(21,492 posts)They don't wait in long lines to make a statement. They wait in long lines because they are seething and angry, and that is what the Karl Roves of the world have depended upon for decades. You are right that marriage equality will ultimately win out - but it's going to be a rocky and violent ride.
Thanks for a thoughtful post, though. However, denying hatred has gotten many killed throughout human history. "It can't be that bad" is an invitation to disaster.
RZM
(8,556 posts)But I don't think all of them are. It's a bit more nuanced then 'they are all a bunch of haters.'

(12,041 posts)Most people who were cheering for the racists during the civil rights era choose not to talk about their past support of blatant racism today, most of them choose to pretend that they were never a part of it. They are able to do that in large part because while there certainly were cameras back in those days there was no internet to go along with those cameras. Today when people take a picture and post it to Facebook it has the potential to be seen by millions and can never be removed from the public sphere.
While many people destroyed the pictures of them attending KKK rallies, people will have to live with the pictures of them attending today's gay bashing appreciation fest today for the rest of their lives. The people who are beaming with pride as they hold their Chick-Fil-A bags in the pictures they are posting on Facebook today will have to explain those pictures to their gay grandchildren years down the road, I suspect a lot of them are going to be living in shame over their support for bigotry today.
The future is moving in the direction of equality and those who are supporting bigotry today are going to only wish they were in the dustbin of history, but rather than being in the dustbin they will be receiving public attention for their bigotry for far longer than they would like.

(A sight disclaimer here. My mother and my step dad converted to Mormonism in their later years and tried to convince me to join. I have known a few Mormons and basically they seem to me to be nice people who are honest and responsible. Admittedly my experience is limited.)
However I have talked to a number of Christians who have expressed an intense dislike of the Mormon religion. Many Christians are strong Republicans and I feel that those who distrust Romney's religion will fail to show up at the polls in November.
