Anyone want to play a game?
I'm going to start off the list and you guys can add to it if you want
No, it's not really a game but I thought it would be a good group post to bring us together and sort of a tension reliever. Mine are things I've heard people that I know actually say btw.
You might be a racist if...
You ever started a sentence with "There are some good blacks...
You call people 'the blacks".
You deny that you are a racist because you voted for Obama.
You say Trump won because the white man is tired of getting the short end of the stick.
Your name is Trump.
Anyone else?

(4,446 posts)Mea culpa.
I might (no might about it, actually, I would) be a racist if I said the things, thought the things, or told the jokes I have in the past. I realize that I'm not really in a position to grade whether I'm a racist now. But I do my best to listen to others, and be open to change. So I guess I would say...
You might be a racist if you don't listen and refuse to change.

(4,446 posts)It's a kindness of you to say that. I can say the same things about myself with respect to sexism, too.
I wish I had the same perspective 30 years ago that I have now. And if I live another 30, I'll probably say the same thing then.

(22,308 posts)hegemony. Growing up white means you benefit from at least some of those institutions and without deep discussions and understandings of those institutions, people will unconsciously replicate the racist systems they benefit from. Increasingly, it's not enough to be "not racist." That does nothing to dismantle the racist systems the U.S. is built on. Anti-racism is required, and it starts in one's own mind and heart with honest questions and answers.

(889 posts)A white cop shoots a black person. You might be a racist if your first response is: "The black person probably deserved it."
And you might be a racist if your first response is: "The white cop is a murderer."
The proper first response is: "What happened?"

"Why do we have to talk about slavery/lynching/Jim Crow/segregation? That's ancient history!"
"But the Africans were the ones selling their own people into slavery!"
"Why can't we have a white history month?"
"Where are you REALLY from?"
"Why do you always bring up race? You're the REAL racist!"

(889 posts)That complaint in particular always bothered me. Time is set aside for the Irish (St. Patrick's Day). And where I live there seems to be an Italian festival every other week. But set aside time for African Americans, and some people get all upset.

(114 posts)When she was a baby, she had an iron deficiency, so the doctor proscribed an iron supplement for her. Now if your baby isn't iron deficient, then the doctor won't proscribe that supplement. That's not discrimination, that doesn't mean the doctor favors my baby over yours. It just means that your baby doesn't need the supplement. By the way, the fact that your baby isn't iron deficient is a GOOD thing!
So when racists complain about Black History month, I try to explain that it's intended to be a remedy to decades of neglecting African American history in our schools. This was never a problem with white history, because it's pretty hard to overlook white history when white people make up the majority.
