Trump floats 'closing up the country for a while' over border security
By Elizabeth Landers, CNN
Updated 6:44 PM ET, Sat May 5, 2018

(CNN)President Donald Trump seemed to float a new idea about border control during at a tax reform roundtable in Ohio.

The President was in the midst of criticizing Democrats during a riff about border security when he slipped in the idea that people might "have to think about closing up the country."

"They don't want the wall, but we're going to get the wall, even if we have to think about closing up the country for a while," Trump said. "We're going to get the wall. We have no choice. We have absolutely no choice. And we're going to get tremendous security in our country."

Trump then mentioned the notion a second time, saying, "And we may have to close up our country to get this straight, because we either have a country or we don't. And you can't allow people to pour into our country the way they're doing."

It was not immediately clear what Trump meant by the remarks. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington said Saturday in an interview with CNN's Ana Cabrera that Trump "is absolutely out of his mind to think that is any kind of a reasonable solution for our economy or compassionate or in line with our values."

It's no less nonsensical than anything else you might try -- and won't hurt anyone undeserving.

Add the following language to any wall bill:

"Public Law 115-97 is repealed in its entirety upon enactment of this legislation." P.L. 115-97 is the Trump Tax Cut bill.

"No public or private funds may be used to conduct any Department of Defense parade outside a military base in the National Capitol Region."

"Any lease on the GSA property located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC, is terminated upon enactment of this legislation. The current tenant of this property will have 60 days from the enactment of this legislation to vacate the premises. A full audit of the current tenant's business activities will be conducted."

"The president shall pay all travel and security expenses related to non-working vacation time spent outside the National Capitol Region. 'Working vacations' shall require the president to spend at least 51 percent of the time between 7 am and 7 pm occupied in business essential to the nation."

"The president shall retain all social media postings made during his or her term of service as official records. They shall be printed with a laser printer in black toner on paper of quality equal to or greater than National Stock Number 7530-01-364-9488*, one posting per sheet, bound into three-ring binders in chronological order, and shall be presented to the National Archivist for secure storage by the last business day of the month in which the posting was made."

* NSN 7530-01-364-9488 is just 20-pound white bond paper.

Also, what we have assumed to be proper "presidential behavior" now has to be law. We never expected the violations of white house standard operation procedure. It can't happen again.

"closing up the country" before November 6?

Btw, if you can still afford crab now, maybe indulge. Maryland's seafood industry lost 40% of its workforce from the visa lottery, including many dependable regulars who've been coming to work here seasonally for decades.

Prom's over, school's out. Let's see how many new grads think filling in the empty places on the lines is an appropriate future for them. We know Trump and many of the conservative extremists in congress do. For them, need for unskilled labor means no need for higher education

What country has ever been "closed up?" Even North Korean has visitors.

Our country has always had people coming to it. It wouldn't be our country otherwise.
