Bernie Sanders set to appear with Ben Jealous at free-college rally in Prince George's County

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is set to appear in Maryland again on Monday to stump for gubernatorial candidate Ben Jealous.

Jealous and Sanders are scheduled to appear together for a 7 p.m. rally in Prince George’s County to support the Democratic gubernatorial candidate’s plan for free community college in Maryland.

Jealous, one of seven leading candidates for the Democratic nomination to run for governor, plans to announce his higher education platform at the Oak Crest Community Center in Capitol Heights.

Sanders stumped for Jealous, the former CEO of the NAACP, at a rally last year in Baltimore calling for a state-based universal health care program.

I don't understand how people don't see that. He's proud of that I-for-Independent by his name, and that's fine; but it's also I-for-Self-Isolated, I-for-I-Don't-Lead-My-Colleaguges, I-for-Irritating-Gadfly (sorry, but he is famous for this among his colleagues).

Far from being a successful leader, Sanders has in fact followed the Democratic leadership for over 25 years, his vote, though not his rhetoric, hewing almost exclusively to the party's, most of his few deviations for tending to his donors, as they almost all do. His overwhelmingly mainstream Democratic electorate in white Vermont has rewarded him for this winning formula by sending him back to DC every election since 1991.

If you really want to make college possible for all who can hack it, you really need to support Democrats, and by all means support whichever Democrats call for making it completely free, instead of just affordable, for at least some.

The thing is: ALL progressive advances -- since and including their establishment of our liberal progressive democracy -- have been the product of LIBERALS. And in this era, liberals make progressive advances happen by working together through the Democratic Party.

For a few decades before the turn of the last century we called ourselves the progressive wing of the new Republican Party, because conservatives had flooded into and mostly taken over our original party, the Democratic-Republican Party formed by Jefferson and Madison. No matter what name we organize under, though, we're the ones who've made it happen. Radical efforts to somehow do more have always ultimately, but usually very quickly, failed.

...from the article:

One of Jealous’ primary opponents, Sen. Richard Madaleno Jr. of Montgomery County, said the plan is far from original.

“He is literally borrowing from many existing ideas, including some of my own, and is just repackaging them as new,” Madaleno said. “Considering that he hasn’t been engaged in Maryland policy, why would he know?”

Mississippi...and yet somehow we will get basic income and more affordable college ? (not free college ). We won't. Run on the ACA and how evil Trump and the GOP are .. think 10 .it works. Also also how shitty the tax cut is...free college and basic income will put us in the same position as when McGovern ran. You have to consider the electorate...we are (and it make me sad to say this) a center left country. You want all the progressive goodies (so do I) then prepare to lay the groundwork to change hearts and minds.

“It is a little bit crazy to be spending more money locking kids up than sending them to the University of Maryland,” Sanders said.

"Ben Jealous (D), a candidate for governor of Maryland, called for free community college at a Monday rally with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

Jealous released a plan on Monday that would eventually make public colleges and universities free for Maryland state students, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The program would be paid for by hiking taxes on wealthy residents and on cigarettes."

"FLINT, Mich. – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign manager on Thursday reiterated the senator’s reasoning for voting in favor of the Clinton administration’s 1994 Crime Bill despite serious reservations. The House version of the bill included a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons. Sanders had supported the ban since 1988. The conference committee version included not only the assault weapons ban but also the Violence Against Women Act provisions. Sanders supported these efforts to protect women.

In Sanders’ statement at the time, he criticized the mass incarceration and death penalty provisions in the bill, saying:

“…it is also my view that through the neglect of our Government and through a grossly irrational set of priorities, we are dooming tens of millions of young people to a future of bitterness, misery, hopelessness, drugs, crime, and violence.

And Mr. Speaker, all the jails in the world, and we already imprison more people per capita than any other country, and all of the executions in the world, will not make that situation right. We can either educate or electrocute. We can create meaningful jobs, rebuilding our society, or we can build more jails."
