Eric H. Holder, Jr. Statement On Election Results in Ohio
May 8, 2018
Washington, D.C. Tonight, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chair of National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement on the election results in Ohio:
The redistricting reform passed today in Ohio makes it much harder for politicians to rig elections through gerrymandering and gives me hope that we can restore fairness to our elections in states around the country. Ohio has proven that when citizens work together to demand their elected officials support a fair redistricting process, positive change is possible.
This fall, Ohioans have the opportunity to support strong Democratic candidates who will have a seat at the table when new state and congressional lines are drawn in 2021. I look forward to supporting Richard Cordray for Governor, Kathleen Clyde for Secretary of State, Zack Space for State Auditor, and Democrats running for the state legislature who will fight for fair districts. I also look forward to supporting my friends Steve Dettlebach for Attorney General and Rob Richardson for State Treasurer.
The National Redistricting Action Fund, the 501(c)(4) affiliate of the NDRC, invested $50,000 in the Coalition for Redistricting Reform in support of voting Yes on Issue 1.
Ohio is one of NDRCs Electoral Targets for 2018. Under the redistricting process in Ohio, the governor, secretary of state, state auditor, and members of the state house and state senate can all play a role in how new maps are drawn.

(58,765 posts)It's always been there, of course, but now it has been put on steroids with computers running demographic algorithms designed to pack districts.
Best of luck to Ohio moving forward, and to all other states trying to throw off the yoke of gerrymandering.

(17,995 posts)The Republican Legislature backed this. They were afraid Democrats would take over.

(13,790 posts)I'm so glad that Obama and Holder started the NDRC and that Holder is running the show. It's SO important to dig in and do the unglamorous work of saving our democracy!!!

(432 posts)I hope theyre working on voter suppression too. How would you like to be an attorney general and face Holder or Obama in court.

(11,573 posts)then I am happy, too. In some states, all it takes to see the astounding unfairness is functioning eyeballs and enough literacy to type or copy-and-paste "gerrymandering." In a lot of cases, what they have wrought is beyond audacious and arrogant.

(22,191 posts)wrong when maps should be created on a more fair and equal basis, that is, don't go and grab one block of people on a street, and then another block, etc., just to pad the numbers e.g., too many dems in 1 district, and just enough repugs in 3 or 4 districts (so the repugs win 3-4 seats to our 1 seat). Too many times this has happened, and eventually we get what we have in Congress today, a Congress controlled by a minority of the population (the repugs).
Also in conjunction, voting rights need to be protected in ALL states by the federal government. The above redistricting in favor of 1 party over others had the effect of devaluing the value of a vote in 1 district vs. those in other districts. Penalties need to be strictly enforced, and enforced immediately instead of the long drawn out process we have today, in that when an illegal action or activities occur, it literally takes forever to get any solution/remedy by the courts.
Maybe a court totally impartial to all political parties should be created for dealing with all matters involving redistricting and voting rights. These guys in the political game (repugs mostly) got a bunch of computer guys together who analyzed voter registrations and voting patterns, and then in turn redistricted the maps to tailor make the Congress so it can be run by a minority party.

(81,560 posts)His district is so abnormally contorted its the poster child for gerrymandering.
Just one more example that proves the theory that the CONS can only win because they CHEAT. The only way they can win consistently is if they can rig the game.

(17,995 posts)We voted the same on Ohio Legislature. We dumped Kasichs efforts to kill public Unions. Now we need to send DeWine/ Husted and his merry Gang back to Green County,Husted to Kettering.
Ginas Hearing was just interrupted by shouts of, Bloody Gina!

(59,508 posts)I am surprised that more attention was not given to this last night. It might have been the biggest thing that happened. It seems that it was the media that tried to make stories of Cordray vs Kuchinich and the surge of Blankenship (who had polled at 16% - so would have needed to double his support.)
