Here in Minnesota, there's a crime that is called "Theft by Swindle." It's my favorite criminal charge. So, Novartis paid Cohen a bunch of money to get them direct contact with Trump. They didn't get what they paid for, but they let him keep the money, because it would have been embarrassing to them if the reason for the payment was known. Cohen stiffed them.
Well, guess what? It's known now. Cohen didn't perform, so Novartis wrote the payment off as a loss.
Theft by Swindle.

(32,589 posts)It's money that nobody has to account for, especially the RNC. I'm pretty sure the "donors" don't feel swindled, they feel like they have access to the President that others don't.
But I could be wrong.

(7,835 posts)They got access, including a private dinner with Trump in Davos, I thought.
They may be claiming they got nothing now, but that's for PR/legal purposes.

(2,857 posts)That Trump met with Jiminez fills the bill. We don't know what the goal was so we don't know if it was accomplished. The act of taking the meeting should be enough.

(82,849 posts)Did Cohen declare the income, or did that money disappear like a Tsing-Tao off the back of your palate?

(118,233 posts)For example, maybe they hoped Cohen could help them push a product (opioid, say) into Russia?
Or maybe it's a disguised bribe ("When the FDA finally tackles X, you remind Mr Trump we helped buy him some time with several of those talkative pussy problems he had" ?
