The time I voted for the lesser of two evils

I get it, I really do. Sometimes your favorite loses the primary, and the general election comes down to two candidates that you don't particularly care for. I've had it happen to me on more than one occasion.

Probably the worst case was in the 2012 elections. I lived in Mesa, Arizona at the time, which is one of the most conservative places in Arizona, which is really saying something. I don't even remember the exact position (it was a city office), or even the names of the two candidates running. What I do remember is that the Democrats didn't even bother to field a candidate, so my choices were between a Libertarian and a Republican. So I voted Libertarian, figuring that the guy might at least be decent when it comes to social issues.

Would I have rather have voted for a Democrat? Sure. Could I have cast a write-in vote for a random local Democrat? I guess, but instead I decided to be realistic. There was one viable chance to keep a Republican out of office, so I took it.

So whenever anyone tells me that they can never support a moderate/centrist/conservative Democrat in the GENERAL election, I tell them that if I can vote for a Libertarian to try to keep a Republican out of office, I can sure as hell vote for a Blue Dog to accomplish the same.

Great anecdote. One should have ideals, but never cease being pragmatic (and vice versa). sandensea May 2018 #1

To being evil. I don't trust people who say that about Democrats.

Certain types said that about, Gore, kerry, Clinton, even Obama.
