Florida Insiders Give Advantage to Scott In Senate Race

May 11, 2018 at 8:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Tampa Bay Times: “Even amid all the talk of the Democratic political wave this year, Florida’s political elites are growing skeptical about Sen. Bill Nelson’s (D) prospects for fending off Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) challenge.”

“Among more than 200 experts and veterans of Florida politics surveyed in the latest Tampa Bay Times Florida Insider Poll, nearly six in 10 this week said they expect Scott to unseat the three-term Democratic Senator. Just over two months ago, more than 57% of the Florida Insiders surveyed expected Nelson to win.”

You must be a really bad candidate to be losing to someone who knowingly stole the taxpayers money.

3. So the guy desperate to continue his political life at all costs is running on term limits?

That's pretty hilarious.

I can't imagine Scott beating him. Scott barely beat Sink and Crist in GOP wave years and Nelson is a much stronger candidate.

And what is this about Scott making inroads among non-Hispanic Cubans ?

8. Nelson's got the power of the incumbency behind him.

And if the Blue Wave reaches all the way down here--and some state races have indicated that it will--that bodes in his favor as well. And if Puerto Ricans displaced by the Hurricane have been moving here and registering, that helps him as well.

Still, I'm nervous. I want to see Rick Scott retired and out of politics. He's done enough damage to us as Governor.

10. Scott's awful. He also opposed Medicaid expansion which disproportionately affects minorities

I read the article. Some of the insider advice is silly, such as suggesting Nelson and Gwen Graham swap places on the ticket, smh.

If I were in FL I would vote for Gwen Graham in the primaries. I suspect she would run stronger in North Florida than her opponents.

The key to a Dem winning a statewide race in FL, as you know, is to kill it in South Florida, fight to a tie or small lead in Central Florida, and avoid getting shut out in North Florida.

I met Bill Nelson when I was a young grad student and he was a congressman from Melbourne. He might not be a DU Democrat but it would be devastating if he lost.

12. I like all three major Gubernatorial candidates (Graham, Gillum, Levine)...

....but probably Graham would fare the best because of her legacy.

Both Republican gubernatorial candidates--Putnam and DeSantis--are predictably awful.

Nelson's fairly low key as Senate Democrats go, but he's done a decent job and is the Democrats' only statewide Democrat at the moment so we need to rally behind him at all costs. I've met him once or twice myself.

Scott beat Crist by 1% and Sink by 1.2%.

Nelson is certainly worth 1.1%.

Scott, yikes

And yes the only thing Rick Scott is talking about is "queer" politicians. He can't say "Career" clearly at all
