After ww2, it was USA & allies who handed taiwan back to republic of China who is fighting peoples republic of China on the mainland. When I was in elementary school back in Taiwan in the late 70’s I have vivid memories of a company of US soldiers resting in our school.

3. South Korea is big enough to look after itself against North Korea and has been for a while.

The only reason to want to keep troops there indefinitely is if you think China would get involved after we left. That said, you have to be very careful timing the actual withdrawal. This is not a good time.
