(4,483 posts)was the stunned look on his face when people told him to shut up. Like every RWer I've ever encountered, he assumed that everyone else feels as he does. These guys need to be taught to be ashamed of themselves, and even if they have racist thoughts, they need to learn that it's not OK to voice them. Everything else aside, it's fucking rude.

Now hoping everyone who knows this creep gets to see this vid.

Such incidents happen daily, over and over again, and in all parts of this country. Have you never observed such an incident? I certainly have. I've also played the role of that other customer in the place who stood up to defend the person suffering the attack.
Anyone is completely justified in speaking up for him or herself, or for speaking up in someone else's defense. That's not berating. That's defending.

(58,724 posts)Berate means "scold or criticize (someone) angrily" and that is exactly what she did.
"Are you a Christian? If you're a Christian, let's talk about your Bible. Do you know that your Bible...in your Bible...in your Bible, Jesus says, "bring the people who don't believe to kill them in front of - <then he says "I don't have conversations with idiots" and she continues> - you are committing hate speech. You are committing hate speech against me."
She is scolding/criticizing him angrily which is what berating means - and, to repeat what I wrote in my post, he deserved it.

He lost face here, and will lose more each time this video is shared. That's the only loss he cares about, so I am content.

Even in very liberal places like California we see the dregs of society feel comfortable spewing bigotry out in the open.

(35,643 posts)hey, it was probably morning. Going to order a coffee to start off the day should be a pleasant experience. He ruined it for everyone. I call people out on stuff, but try to do it in a nice way. There has to be a better way of handling this than to make a big, nasty scene. At the moment I cannot think what that would be, however. Well, maybe this:
Maybe she should have gone over and paid for his coffee, smiled at him, and said, "We're not bad people."

(22,336 posts)Why do we always expect people who are oppressed to be sweet and nice to people who are being horrible to them? That is an unreasonable expectation, and I doubt it is at all effective.
And HE is the one who created a scene.

(11,254 posts)I don't remember that part . . .
ProfessorPlum
(11,254 posts)and in Luke 19, Jesus does indeed speak those words. But it is while telling a parable, and the line seems to be attributable to the "king" in the story, not Jesus himself. But -- it is complicated because presumably the king represents Jesus (or the son of man), and also - it isn't clear to me where the king's words end and Jesus' words begin. A couple more well placed quotation marks could help here, lol.
But it looks like if you had an ax to grind against Christians, this is a more or less valid point of argument.
Runningdawg
(4,514 posts)through the treatment of Native Americans we can see that some Christians took this parable to heart with the blessing of the government. To be a member of the NA church was a crime until 1978.
ProfessorPlum
(11,254 posts)then that is an entirely different story. Murderously intolerant, a lot of them.
To be a member of the NA church was a crime until 1978.
this surprises me. But i suppose it shouldn't.

(36,827 posts)It's debatable on whether or not Jesus wished death on unbelievers, but he made no mistake about wishing for eternal torture. Seems worse by comparison, assuming one believes the mythology.
ProfessorPlum
(11,254 posts)meek and mild do we get infinite torture for finite crimes. There could be no more immoral doctrine.
But the distinction between killing unbelievers while on earth and letting god sort them out after people are dead (of natural causes, one hopes) is an important one. Jesus' wheat and chaff, and goats and sheep, get separated after their deaths, not before.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)Jesus was adamant in his advocacy of the older gospels in which you will find a few references to killing non-believers.

(11,254 posts)You can't say Jesus said "don't eat shrimp" .
ah, who cares, Jesus is a literary character created by a group of Greek speaking scribes 50-110 years after his death. No one can say for sure what he said. I was just interested if those words were literally in the bible. And they are, with a few caveats.

Oh, yeah, asshole? Well, I don't wanna be killed by a white madman with a gun, which you are FAR more likely to be. But I guess that wouldn't count as terrorism to you, now, would it? Terrorism is only when the perpetrator has other than white skin.
