The all volunteer army started in the U.S. in 1973. MY husband is a veteran and he remembers. I remember because I was relieved that my little brother would not be drafted. He was still in high school in 1973.

received GI Bill benefits as a Veteran when he returned home. Obama's uncle helped liberate part of Buchenwald concentration camp. That's a very good history of military service.

If you had the equivalent of many 9/11's every day... you would be doing something to support the war effort.

Elizabeth was not required to serve, but she chose to, and it was in the latter part of the war when she was old enough (18).
